A very fitting follow up to his Birthright: Book of Man which leaves one with an undefined feeling at the end which was an excellent book. This book was creative and thoughtful. Good novella.
Wasn't sure about a new author I was not familiar with. All I can say it was Well Worth it. The book was great from start to end. As result I just downloaded the 2 sequels and look forward to others. Most details were tied up and explained so no loose ends technically altho a few physics area may be suspect. The narration could have been a little more diverse because at a few points I had to go back and relisten to determine who had supposedly made the statement. Overall a great listen and now I am looking to listening to #2 and #3.
I found the book had a good story line but the author really drug things out in very detailed descriptions of things. Too detailed and I found myself saying, "ok let's get on with the story". As for the narrator, he is very distinct in reading but very little differentiation between characters and you had to really try to concentrate which character was really speaking. Overall I found both tedious.
Clancy has continued to improve with age and this is another example. Whereas many of his earlier books set the stage and background in exhausting detail for 150-200 pages before any action started, this book is an example of the change made beginning with Rainbow Six where some of the action starts right up front. Great book and gets harder and harder to put down as the story progresses. This is continuing along those lines with our familiar story and I am eagerly looking forward to the next addition.
Loved the book. It reminded me of Ringo's "Troy Rising" but on a more realistic tract and story line. Excellent book and I just downloaded the next in the series. Great read.
Interesting and somewhat different kind of book. It is not an action packed book but a different twist on public relations and the twists and turns associated with dealing with people, or in this case an alien race. Often funny it is also serious at times. Overall a fun and different type of SF.
This is somewhat of a biased review. This was he first sci-fi book that I ever read during my time in grade school. Since that time I have revisited and reread this book several times over the intervening years. It is the book that really got me into sci-fi ending with me working for NASA and now working in the private Space sector. I find that the story behind the book is very sound and realistic and timeless. It is still a great story after all these years and revisits. I was disappointed in the Narration. I felt it was more of a drone. I recognize that the story is from the main character's "diary" but when the main character has discussions with others some better portrayal of voices would have been expected. It almost turned everything into a monotone. Regardless, it is a great book and well worth revisiting and I will probably revisit more times before I move on to the next level.
Lives up to the Clancy tradition. This book was easy to listen to and not need a flow chart of characters to keep track of like his earlier books. Phillips was able to execute the foreign names and places flawlessly like having lived there. Overall a captivating book that you hated to see the fast paced end come to and as usual leaves you anxiously waiting for the next one.
Although still a good book, I did not feel it was of the same quality as the 1st book. There was a lot of repetitious explanations throughout the book which got a little boring and frankly a little irritating. It made me start wondering if the author was trying to meet a publisher's page count requirement. Did the author find himself short pages for just the real story and needed filler? Marc Vietor was excellent as usual.
Thoroughly enjoyed the book both the technical as well as the levity. Ringo continues his tradition of mixing both which makes it all that more real. I am looking forward to the 2nd book. Hope it comes out soon.
