NASA discovered the alien ship lurking in the asteroid belt in the 1960's. They kept the Target under intense surveillance for decades, letting the public believe they were exploring the solar system, while they worked feverishly to refine the technology needed to reach it. Dr. Jane Holloway is content documenting nearly-extinct languages and had never contemplated becoming an astronaut. But when NASA recruits her to join a team of military scientists for an expedition to the Target, it's an adventure she can't refuse.

It was refreshing to find a book that was not routine and had some fresh ideas. The biggest negative was that it ended. Can't wait for the sequel.

The combined forces of humanity have beaten back the First Imperium invasion. For the first time, the enemy has been defeated in battle. The cost was high in blood and suffering, but the Line held. The heart of human-occupied space has been saved from annihilation. For now. There is little time for the victorious warriors to savor their triumph or mourn their dead. The First Imperium has been driven back, but it has not been defeated. No one expects the fruits of victory to be more than a brief respite.

    Story

20% story, 80% same old battles with the same terrible narration. I have slugged through these books in spite of the terrible narration but have now had it. He has an extensive set of superior characters but fails to develop them as well as the potentially excellent story arc. However, the author instead focuses on the now tedious battle sequences while repeating many of the same old phrases. The narrator's range of voices is obviously very limited and many of them do not even "fit" what one would expect a real character to even sound like. When men sound like women something is wrong. So I surrender. The story line is failing, it battles repetitious and I can no longer take the narration for what little bit of new storyline there is. The series had great potential but the author failed it on many fronts. Truly a shame but can't take any more.

The Third Frontier War is over, and the Western Alliance is triumphant. All across human-occupied space, colony worlds celebrate the coming of peace. But peace is an elusive dream, and more trouble is brewing. The war was expensive, and the economies of the Superpowers, always fragile, are on the verge of total collapse. The Directorate, the shadowy intelligence organization that has become the true power behind the Alliance government, plans to strip the colonies bare to pay the costs of war.

    Story

The story development was good altho it could have used a little more storyline development. The story progresses a little too rapidly. However.....once again the narrator really takes away from what would be a good book. His range of character voices is absolutely terrible. He makes male battle hardened troopers sound like timid gals (nothing against our hardened women in our armed forces) and vice versa. At times it is was very difficult to distinguish which character was actually talking. The narrator has a very poor range of voices and almost shouldn't even try. Anyway, it is a good story. You just have to bear the narrator.

The Third Frontier War is raging, and all across human-occupied space worlds are burning. Massive fleets struggle for dominance and kilometer-long war ships exchange thermonuclear barrages. Battered in the early years of the war, the Western Alliance is resurgent. The brilliant Admiral Augustus Garret leads the Alliance fleet from victory to victory, taking the war to the very heart of the enemy empires.

    Story

This book is actually better than the 1st book. However, the author short changed his readers by taking the last 3 chapters of his 1st book and inserting them as the 1st 3 chapters of this book. I don't like paying for something twice. I hope the 3rd book is not this way. That is why I gave it 3 stars and not 4.

Regardless, the story is becoming much more interesting and the character play and storyline is much improved and involved which is good. It is becoming more than just an external milk toast narrative of events. The reader has a chance to feel more involvement in the story.

Although I still am not overly impressed with the narrator's style, and his "nasally" voices, the storyline is getting more exciting and involved and I will get the next book in the series. The narrator style is annoying (at least to me and my apologies) and I nearly went ahead and bought the "hardcopy" version just so I wouldn't have to listen to him. Maybe I am becoming "desensitized" to him or maybe he has slightly improved, but i will get the next audio version of the book.

Erik Cain joined the marines to get off death row. The deal was simple; enlist to fight in space and he would be pardoned for all his crimes. In the 23rd Century, assault troops go to war wearing AI-assisted, nuclear-powered armor, but it is still men and blood that win battles. From one brutal campaign to the next, Erik and his comrades fight an increasingly desperate war over the resource rich colony worlds that have become vital to the economies of Earth's exhausted and despotic Superpowers.

Overall I thought the story was fairly decent but the narration I found was "irritating". The narrator tried to add in some sound effects which was creative but he narration rhythm was monotonous. The book would have been so much better in my opinion with a different narrator. As for the story itself, it suffers from being more of a "story narration" rather than characters "experiencing" the story. I will try the 2nd book of the series, but if it is more of the same, I will probably drop the series.

After 1st getting into the book with it revolving around adolescents, I was initially a little skeptical. However the story developed quite nicely with many twists and turns. I am just about finished with this Book 1 and I am looking forward to Book 2. Actually this is a great book and story. One well worth reading or listening to.

This book is better than the 1st. The character development was in more depth and the characters added had very distinct personalities. Wasn't sure about a new author I was not familiar with. All I can say it was Well Worth it. The book was great from start to end. As result I just downloaded the 2 sequels and look forward to others. Most details were tied up and explained so no loose ends technically altho a few physics area may be suspect. The narration could have been a little more diverse because at a few points I had to go back and relisten to determine who had supposedly made the statement. Overall a great listen and now I am looking to listening to #2 and #3.

The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

I found the book had a good story line but the author really drug things out in very detailed descriptions of things. Too detailed and I found myself saying, "ok let's get on with the story". As for the narrator, he is very distinct in reading but very little differentiation between characters and you had to really try to concentrate which character was really speaking. Overall I found both tedious.

Jack Ryan has only just moved back into the Oval Office when he is faced with a new international threat. An aborted coup in the People's Republic of China has left President Wei Zhen Lin with no choice but to agree with the expansionist policies of General Su Ke Quiang. They have declared the South China Sea a protectorate and are planning an invasion of Taiwan. The Ryan administration is determined to thwart China’s ambitions, but the stakes are dangerously high as a new breed of powerful Chinese anti-ship missiles endanger the US Navy's plans to protect the island.

Clancy has continued to improve with age and this is another example. Whereas many of his earlier books set the stage and background in exhausting detail for 150-200 pages before any action started, this book is an example of the change made beginning with Rainbow Six where some of the action starts right up front. Great book and gets harder and harder to put down as the story progresses. This is continuing along those lines with our familiar story and I am eagerly looking forward to the next addition.
