Considered by critics to be Barth's most distinguished novel, The Sot-Weed Factor has acquired the status of a modern classic. Set in the late 1600s, it recounts the chaotic odyssey of the hapless, ungainly Ebeneezer Cooke. Cooke is sent to the New World to oversee his father's tobacco business and to record the struggles of the Maryland colony in an epic poem. On his mission, he is captured by pirates and Indians; loses his father's estate to roguish impostors; falls in love with a former prostitute; and meets a gallery of treacherous characters who continually switch identities.

The story line was decent but there was way too much philosophizing or attempts at clever language use by the author. I found myself fast forwarding again and again to get past these parts.

In a thrilling narrative showcasing his gifts as storyteller and researcher, Erik Larson recounts the spellbinding tale of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Also available abridged.

    "disappointed"
    Overall

I thought this book was poorly written. It felt like the author included every piece of research he uncovered no matter how irrelevant to the story. Adding these details made many parts drag on monotonously and killed any build up of suspense or excitement.

  • Atlas Shrugged , Volume 1

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 37 mins)

Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus, which launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon. Atlas Shrugged emerged as a premier moral apologia for capitalism, a defense that had an electrifying effect on millions of readers (and now listeners) who have never heard capitalism defended in other than technical terms.

Valerie says: "An excellent listen, despite its length."
    "a disappointment"
    Overall

I was disappointed in the series. There are multiple soliloquies up to 3 hours long that could have gotten the point made in 10 minutes. Thank goodness for fast forward. I guess stretching the story out to 3 volumes tripled the profit for the author, so was in line with the dollar worship the author posits. Another annoyance - even with a female protagonist, the book is sexist and male oriented.
