The plot is somewhat contrived, with improbable last-minute escapes, etc. However, if you are looking for good, plain fun and an entertaining read (as I was), you will like this book.
The narrator is superb.
He doesn't gloss over JFK's weaknesses, but he portrays a man who grows into the office. I lived through those events as a pre-teen, and I got a real thrill hearing him put them into their context. I happen to like O'Reilly's voice and naarative style, but I guess that's a matter of personal taste.
First of all, you have to listen to them in order:
The Memory of Earth
The Call of Earth
The Ships of Earth
Stefan Rudnicki is my all-time favorite naarator, and he certainly didn't disappoint me in this one. I really enjoy hearing the Russian-sounding names rolling easily off his tounge.
Card returns to a recurring theme in his books. An honest, good-hearted brother who wants nothing more than to earn the love of his cynical, self-serving brother
(Alvin/Calvin Ender/Peter...) All the elements of a classical OSC novel - some mysticism, good solid sci-fi, romance, and self-discovery. His character development is superb, as usual.
Warning: If you purchase the first one, be prepared to purchase the other four. You won't be able to stop.
Two swashbuckling Scotsmen to the rescue.
The story has the usual mix of suspense and loyalty.
I love Brian Jaques Scottish burr, but this book features two charming Higland Scottish accents.
BJ fans won't be disappointed.
I couldn't stop until I heard all three books. A young girl finds strength and courage and some unlikely allies. I love the naarator. She sounds like a young girl because that is the main character!
Orson Scott Card is incapable of writing a bad book, and Stefan Rudnicki is incapable of rendering a bad naaration. Pastwatch is a masterpiece even by their lofty standards.
The historical research alone which went into the writing of the book is breathtaking.
Card has crafted one of the most compelling and brilliant plots I have ever read.
Don't start listening at night if you expect to get to work the next day.
