This is simply a delightful and classic story that I and my children (ages 9 & 6) have enjoyed. If you've only seen the film, you should treat yourself to the novel - though it is admittedly difficult not to judge the book in light of the epic film.
What I could not tolerate was Anne Hathaway's dreadful performance. Ideally the narration should complement the story, but not distract or steal from the author's words. Hathaway's performance is a complete distraction - to the point that you hope certain characters won't have anything else to say because you don't want to hear her needlessly over-the-top voicing. Why does the palace guard have a southern (US) accent? Why does another person have a French accent? It's all just too much.
Do yourself a favor and pick from the 5 or so other versions of Baum's classic on Audible.
Truly extraordinary sci-fi. A post-scarcity world in the late 21st century is confronted by an entirely alien life form. Oh, and there are vampires in the future too. Great.
You really get the sense if the character of subject, 41, George H.W. Bush and the love felt for him by his son, George W. Bush. it was a very rewarding account of a great American's life.
As a general rule, I read everything Dean Koontz writes - and I will continue to do so. But this work left me wanting. Unlike Koontz's more traditional heart-pounding thrillers with a touch of the supernatural (sometimes more than a touch), this book is very slow - even plodding. The action is limited. There is a definite Koontzian heart-warming payoff, but it's just not worth all the lengthy build-up.
A true classic. Scalzi's delightful wit comes through - and Dufris provides an outstanding voice to the compelling narrative. I couldn't stop listening!
For those of you who have loved Koontz as long as I have (20+ years), this is a delightful throwback to older favorites like Midnight & Lightening. It's an engrossing mix of sci-fi & outright spookiness - also charged with that biting social commentary that we Koontz fans love. One of his best in years!
