Life as Kim and Krickitt Carpenter knew it was shattered beyond recognition two months after their marriage when a devastating car wreck left Krickitt with a massive head injury and in a coma for weeks. When she finally awoke, she had no idea who Kim was and no recollection of their relationship.

The story itself is inspiring, but the writing was not beautiful or gripping. I wouldn't listen to it again, though I am glad I know about this story of commitment.

  • Blue Like Jazz: Non-Religious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality

In Donald Miller's early years, he was vaguely familiar with a distant God. But when he came to know Jesus Christ, he pursued the Christian life with great zeal. Within a few years he had a successful ministry that ultimately left him feeling empty, burned out, and, once again, far away from God. In this intimate, soul-searching account, Miller describes his remarkable journey back to a culturally relevant, infinitely loving God.

I LOVED Miller's book A Million Miles In A Thousand Years, so I was eager to purchase this one. I was disappointed. It took me two months to get through it because I just couldn't engage. I think a major problem was the narrator. He talked slowly, and he made Miller sound pompous. A Million Miles was narrated by Miller himself, and I loved his quick, self-depricating, funny delivery. There were some good insights in this book that have stayed with me and made me think about God in a different way--but I wouldn't strongly recommend this book to a friend. I might recommend a few chapters but certainly not the entire book.

At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

This story will stay with me for the rest of my life. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to feel challenged to live with more gratitude, faith, and joy. The narration was excellent and the story was life-changing.

Jeannette Walls's memoir The Glass Castle was "nothing short of spectacular" (Entertainment Weekly). Now, in Half Broke Horses, she brings us the story of her grandmother, told in a first-person voice that is authentic, irresistible, and triumphant.

The main character is very likeable. I enjoyed listening to this book, but it didn't grip me like most novels do. An interesting story of a very unique life, but not a life-changing story.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

A beautifully written epic about the struggles of women in Afghanistan. It was a difficult read but such an important one. At times I thought it was getting too long and involved, but it came together perfectly by the end. I fell in love with the two main characters and have thought of them often since I finished the book. Most of all, this book made me think about the world and my place in it--it made me profoundly grateful for my life, my family, and my freedoms.

Full of beautiful, heart-wrenching, and hilarious stories, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years details one man's opportunity to edit his life as if her were a character in a movie. Years after writing his best-selling memoir, Donald Miller went into a funk and spent months sleeping in and avoiding his publisher. One story had ended, and Don was unsure how to start another.

This book made me think about my life and how I want to live a better "story." It made me feel reflective and inspired. Best of all, the book was funny and interesting, not preachy. I am going to buy the hard copy of the book now, so I can reread and annotate some of his profound insights...it was that good! A great listen.
