Recipe for disaster: Celebrity chef Stanley Chipotle comes to Trenton to participate in a barbecue cook-off and loses his head - literally. Throw in some spice: Bail bonds office worker Lula is witness to the crime, and the only one she'll talk to is Trenton cop, Joe Morelli. Pump up the heat: Chipotle's sponsor is offering a million-dollar reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the capture of the killers.

    Overall

I enjoyed most of the books in this series. They entertained me and made me laugh. But this one did not make me laugh. The characters are becoming to predictable, and the dialogue is always the same. This book focuses entirely too much on unpleasant bodily functions; and seriously, a little of that goes a long way. It isn't cute anymore.

Pirriwee Public's annual school Trivia Night has ended in a shocking riot. One parent is dead. The school principal is horrified. As police investigate what appears to have been a tragic accident, signs begin to indicate that this devastating death might have been cold-blooded murder. In this thought-provoking novel, number-one New York Times best-selling author Liane Moriarty deftly explores the reality of parenting and playground politics, ex-husbands and ex-wives, and fractured families.

From the author of The Power of One comes an inspiring human drama of three lives brought together and changed forever by the extraordinary events of recent history. Inspired by real events, Bryce Courtenay's new novel tells the story of three people from vastly differing backgrounds. All they have in common is a tough beginning in life.

    "War story"
    Overall

I am only 1/3 of the way through, and it is pretty interesting, but I am not much of a war story reader, and so far this book is only about a war story. This was not specified in the overview of the book, and I would not have ordered it if it had been.

Philip Roth presents a vivid portrait of an innocent man being swept away by a current of conflict and violence in his own backyard - a story that is as much about loving America as it is hating it. Seymour "Swede" Levov, a legendary high school athlete, a devoted family man, a hard worker, and the prosperous heir of his father's Newark glove factory comes of age in thriving, triumphant postwar America. But everything he loves is lost when the country begins to run amok in the turbulent 1960s. Not even a most private, well-intentioned citizen, it seems, gets to sidestep the sweep of history. American Pastoral is the story of a fortunate American's rise and fall ... a strong, confident man, a master of social equilibrium, overwhelmed by the forces of social disorder. For the Swede is not allowed to stay forever blissful living out life in rural Old Rimrock in his 170 year-old stone farmhouse with his pretty wife (his college sweetheart and Miss New Jersey of 1949) and his lively albeit precocious daughter, the apple of his eye ... that is until she grows up to become a revolutionary terrorist.

    Overall

I could not wait to finish this book. I felt it was way too full of rants and repitition. I can see that the story would be interesting to people, but there was way too much 'droning' and too little of what was interesting and compelling about the story and characters. I thought the narration was very good, however!

I really enjoyed this book. Granted, I don't typically read or listen to science fiction / fantasy type of books , yet I found the characters compelling and the story line interesting and fun. It may well not be an 'original', but what is at this point? From the perspective of enjoying a story and it's characters, I think this book is worth reading.

After listening to Lucia, Lucia and Big Stone Gap I was very excited about listening to this book. Unfortunately I never felt connected to the main character, or any of the characters for that matter. The story was interesting but not really very amusing. I was disappointed after the compelling / amusing characters in her other books.

When Ave Maria Mulligan, a thirty-five-year-old self-proclaimed spinster, discovers a skeleton in her family closet, her quiet life begins to unravel. Comic and compassionate, Big Stone Gap is the story of a woman who thinks life has passed her by, only to learn that the best is yet come. Don't miss the sequel Big Cherry Holler.
