References to "romance novels" and cliched plot but delivered in a moderately interesting manner. Poor girl marries icy rich childhood friend in a "business deal" that gives her money to save her parents' home and allows him to gain full control of his architectural firm.

Teenage delinquent Angel Crawford lives with her redneck father in the swamps of southern Louisiana. She's a high school dropout, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and has a police record a mile long. But when she's made into a zombie after a car crash, her addictions disappear, except for her all-consuming need to stay "alive".

    Story

Finally - a southern story with a true southern drawl, narration is well done. The tone is just right for a young high school drop out and the writing is enhanced by Allison McLemore's inflection and emphases. There was only one time close to the end when I could not distinguish the fact that the main character was thinking to herself rather than talking out loud.

Love the premise that the best place for zombies to work are funeral homes and morgues. Of course!

Boss loves to dive historical ships, derelict spacecraft found adrift in the blackness between the stars. Sometimes she salvages for money, but mostly she's an active historian. She wants to know about the past--to experience it firsthand. Once she's dived the ship, she'll either leave it for others to find or file a claim so that she can bring tourists to dive it as well. It's a good life for a tough loner, with more interest in artifacts than people.

Perhaps the narration was supposed to fit the emotionally challenged main character's psyche but it was so wooden that even that fit is in question to me. Just not interesting even when the story is pretty good.

Life is not easy for the poor relations of England’s upper crust, but fate and clever schemes bring them together. Lady Fortescue and Colonel Sandhurst hatch a plan: What if they were to transform her decrepit Bond Street home into a posh hotel, offering their guests the pleasure of being waited upon by nobility? With the help of other down-and-out aristocrats, they do just that, and London’s newest hotel, The Poor Relation, is born. The establishment is an immediate hit with London’s most illustrious citizens, save the Duke of Rowcester....

Love the way Davina Porter takes this little story and makes it into something worth listening to. Sets up the series in a very strong manner with the Duke gets the girl out of the kitchen. What's in #2?

With unforgettable characters, a sweeping backdrop, and passionate storytelling, this is a fantasy debut to rival that of Robert Jordan. Filled with adventure and bloodshed, pageantry and piracy, mystery and menace, Assassin's Apprentice is the story of a royal house and the young man who is destined to chart its course through tempests of change.

This medieval series has a great narrator in Paul Boehmer. He captures the different nuances of the voices he uses so well that you have a great mental picture of the characters. Story is strong with lots of action spread throughout the story and with the type of flawed characters that make it so interesting. You are rooting for Fitz to succeed even though his missions are to poison select figures who have been determined to threaten the kingdom of the six Duchies. Good start.

The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 - "Q" is for "question mark". A world that bears a question....

I know everyone is crazy about this author but I am having a hard time adjusting to his style of constant digressions and over analyzed situations. The funny thing is, I believe the narrators pull the novel off better than I could have done reading it in print form. Still it is a LONG book and you become extremely impatient to get somewhere, anywhere, in this 1Q84 world. The absolutely matter-of-fact tone of the narrators for the sex scenes is actually very funny in its own way. Lots of sex and adult situations may make some listeners uncomfortable.

If you decide to listen to this be ready to commit for an awful lot of gym sessions or some long commutes to get it done.

The 50 contestants in the Miss Teen Dream pageant thought this was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in their state-appropriate costumes and compete in front of the cameras. But sadly, their airplane had another idea, crashing on a desert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, little water, and practically no eyeliner. What’s a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program - or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan - or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?

    Story

Author narrators are not usually too great. Libba Bray does a very good job with her book as a narrator, she just did not excel as an author this time. Great idea but too many characters to keep straight. Too many plot lines that peter out, too many characters who are shallow stereotypes in a book that is supposedly celebrating girls who do not fit the beauty queen stereotype. Funny spots make it bearable and the sex humor makes it senior high.

You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction.

Excellent British accent for the narration of an understated, humorous, and poignant novel of adult relationships. The Major with all his flaws and strengths is a wonderfully deep character whose tone and wit are beautifully brought to life by Peter Altschuler. Highly recommend. I smiled my way through the gym workouts with this one.

    Story

The werewolf idea has been overused but that is not the problem with this story, which is light and fluffy and OK in many ways. The problem is a narrator who is pretending to be a twenty-something from the deep south, specifically Mississippi, without a Southern accent. Nada. The accent is referred to in the text at least three times but it is totally missing. The male voices are Ok, although not inspired, and the voice of Alaskan natives are Ok accent-wise but very similar. Narrator just brings this nice, mediocre novel down.

Lacey Terwilliger's shock and humiliation over her husband's philandering prompt her to add some bonus material to Mike's company newsletter: stunning Technicolor descriptions of the special brand of "administrative support" his receptionist gives him. The detailed mass e-mail to Mike's family, friends, and clients blows up in her face, and before one can say "instant urban legend", Lacey has become the pariah of her small Kentucky town and a media punch line....

Women will roll in the floor with this great narration of a funny book. Amanda Ronconi has absolutely nailed the style and voice of Molly Harper's character.
