I'm not a voracious reader. I hadn't even heard of True Grit until the recent release from the Coen brothers. After seeing that, I tried watching the original, the one with John Wayne. I thought the acting and the screenplay were really terrible in that version. Although Robert Duvall was a good Lucky Ned. But then I downloaded this audiobook. Charles Portis is a fantastic writer and Donna Tartt does a wonderful job narrating. I thought she did a great job with the male voices. Considering the entire story is from Mattie's perspective, I didn't think it distracting at all that a female was doing the male voices. Donna's voice fits Mattie's character precisely, in my opinion, and I believe her rendition is as true to Portis' intention as it can be.
