Once again, Fannie Flagg gives us a story of richly human characters, the saving graces of the once-maligned middle classes and small-town life, and the daily contest between laughter and tears. Fannie truly writes from the heartland, and her storytelling is, to quote Time, "utterly irresistible."

I had high hopes for this book, but didn't find it very interesting.

Fannie Flag's reading is pleasant, but I'm not sure the book had a point. It was, more or less, like spending a day in a beauty shop, listening to the beautician talk about the mundane doings of people in her town.

There are no momentous events. There is no conflict. There are only characters living day to day in their rural town.

I prefer books with a plot, or at least something to say.
