In Broken Harbor, all but one member of the Spain family lies dead, and it’s up to Mick “Scorcher” Kennedy to find out why. Mick must piece together why their house is full of cameras pointed at holes in the walls and how a nighttime intruder bypassed all the locks. Meanwhile, the town of Broken Harbor holds something else for Mick: disturbing memories of a childhood summer gone terribly wrong.

this is the fourth in a loose series about detectives in the dublin murder squad, and while the least excellent so far, is still good. the stakes here don't seem high enough, for the detectives or for the murderers. too much is told in backstory and only occasionally does it feel scary or like anything is at risk.
the performance is great. her writing is great. the story just isn't as great as the last three books.

Jacob Cameron Asprey, Jr., is the charming son of a charming crook who’s currently residing in the state pen. Strangled by family ties, Jake is barely scraping by. When a local crime boss offers him a deal he’d be a fool to take and a chump to pass up, Jake sees a way out of his troubles - until his options begin to close down, and he finds himself at the heart of a dark plot that will place those he loves in harm’s way. This Is How You Fall is a story of old flames, old debts, and a new twist on an old con.

    Any additional comments?

i purchased this book for a very random reason, but i was very surprised by how much i enjoyed it.
while the protagonist (of course his name is Jake. It could only other be Jack or Nick or Travis McGee.) is something of a male fantasy, a slacker kind of a loser sort who is still the guy all the ladies want to get with and the men want to work for him, intentionally he's still a good guy.
it is a morality play that is pretty well done, and--except for the part where the writer chickens out and doesn't let the consequences for the protagonist's actions be what they should be, instead he lets the consequences be a loss of something unloved--it was enjoyable, compelling, and well written.

    also well read.

"The Secret Place", a board where the girls at St Kilda's School can pin up their secrets anonymously, is normally a mishmash of gossip and covert cruelty, but today someone has used it to reignite the stalled investigation into the murder of handsome, popular Chris Harper. Stephen joins forces with the abrasive Detective Antoinette Conway to find out who and why.

    Any additional comments?

Tana French does not only her usual good job of getting in the competitive minds of Dublin's "murder" squad, but an amazing job of showing the multipicities of being a teenaged (or even adult) girl and the way boys (and men) use that against them.

story was great, i didn't get bored like in the last one, and it was read well by both readers.

wish there were already another to listen to now!

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia makes remarks on the topic of "Constitutional Interpretation." He speaks at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC.

Jeff says: "Supreme Court for Dummies"
"wow, for a lawyer, he's really illogicial"
    Overall

according to scalia's interpretation of what is unconstitutional, it's unconstitutional to drive a car. yup. that's right. no where in the constitution did the framers of the document say, all persons born in the united states have a right to transportation. therefore it must be unconstitutional.
what a moron. saying abortion is unconstitutional because it is not written into the document also makes open heart surgery and chemotherapy unconstitutional, and by his logic, if "homosexual sodomy" is illegal, so is the purely procreative sex he has with his wife.
oh wait. the constitution is a LEGAL DOCUMENT regarding forming of a government. these aren't constitutional issues. these are private personal issues.
the constitution doesn't say anything about murder, either. but because it doesn't mention it doesn't make it unconstitutional to not commit murder.

having the writer, especially if she can read with conviction, read the book you cane elevate even a great book. donna tartt does the lackadasical californian richard papin, and the snotty bratty poor bunny with such variety that i can listen to this book over and over again, from any point, like catching your favorite movie on tv.

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

Pamela Murphy says: "COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN"
    "compelling story on many levels"
    Overall

this is a great audio book to keep you interested. there are a lot of different compelling stories twisting around each other, if a bit of a male fantasy of having the perfect long time companion who he does not have to marry, and having an adoring daughter even if he is a terrible father, and being chased by, and fallen in love with, by the sexy but unavailable woman 20 years his junior, all while being morally elevated above everyone else. the story was still good. the bit of S&M at the end was i think thrown in so hollywood would make a movie. but i had fun listening to it.
