Overall, the concepts in this book really hit home for me. I've been struggling for awhile with what could possibly be so bad about Wheat. It's been consumed for far longer than 10,000 years, and many cultures existed for centuries with no "Western Diseases" consuming it. This books answers that question with spades, but be warned. The author dives headfirst into a lot of technical jargen, and the book could have gotton to the point in about 1/2 the amount of words. The bottom line however is that I tried it, and it worked fabulously well. The belly did go down, doing nothing more than just stopping bread. Not oats, or rice, or grits. Just Wheat. It just went away. Took about 3 weeks, and it was slow, but it worked. Mild joint pain also cleared up.
I've been reading (listening) to both self help and science books for many years, and I'll have to say that this is the best one yet. It can't be overstated how useful this book can be to anyone who works in corporate america, but the insights are equally useful to everyday living as well. Now granted, you probably need to be one who enjoys learning, and maybe scientific insight type of books to be as pumped as I am about the book, but the way the material is presented, any self help type can really enjoy this. I see myself listening to this book multiple times to make sure that I extract all the lessons, because I certainly intend to apply these insights into my everyday thinking. Great job.
This one is just as good as the first, but what I really liked was that the authors really tried to zoom in on the current topics that we are all concerned with. Subjects like Global warming and car seats are serious business to many these days. It was very refreshing to hear these topics and many more from the different prospectives that these freakenomics books offer. Very enjoyable listen.
I've been engaged in both science learning and self improvement for a long time, but I have never heard a book that so clearly explains some (at least to me) new concepts of how our minds do in fact affect our personal environment. This very well explained and interesting information about the connection between our physical biology and our mental and physical environment will give you an entirely new and powerful way of looking at how you might change your life for the better.
This is, without a doubt, one of the best self help books that I've ever come across. Be prepared however for some intense learnings that may at first seem un-familiar, unless you have actually been to a therapist/counselor before. This is a high powered therapy session for the masses on tape. Having had formal training as a counselor at the Masters level, I consider the approach used here to be outstanding. This is not however a casual, read it on the beach type book. It requires effort to use these techniques, so if you really don't intend to actually DO anything in the way of improving yourself, then go find The Time Travelers Wife and download it. That one works on the beach.
First of all, if you are offended by graphically strong language, then just forget this book. It will offend you to no end as has been pointed out numerous times. The book is also quite long, and at times I lost interest as the subject matter seemed to drag on a bit. The book also seems, at least to me, to wander in its organization, moving first from pre chefdome and early influences to first job, then to 10th job, then oops, I forgot about that episode right after the first job, and so on. This is not a bad thing, and certainly might be considered proper literary organization by some, but I think this is what caused some of the loss of interest. Having said these few critical things, overall this is a really good, funny, and interesting book. If you are considering going into this business, starting a second career or you have a son or daughter that's considering it, it's a must read. Even if your not, this is a great book just to find out what's going on in those New York kitchens. Granted, some of you may never eat the fish special on Monday again, or every go to another brunch, but you will have a much greater appreciation for what those cooks have to go through to get your silly little piece of meat cooked and on your table. And I think that along the way, you'll laugh a few times as well.
