Nathan Grey, the Earl of Lindsey, is infamously known as the Libertine of Lindsey for his scandalous ways with women. But when he hears gossip that his estranged wife, Evelyn, is about to be named in The Book of Scandal, he has no choice but to remove her from London to protect her and himself from charges of treason — even if it calls for abduction!

I just finished listening to Lisa Kleypas' "Dreaming of You," which I loved, and then went onto this book by Julia London. For me, this book suffers by comparison - I just could not get into the story and I didn't care about the characters.

In the Houses of Montague and Capulet, there is only one goal: power. The boys are born to fight and die for honor and-if they survive-marry for influence and money, not love. The girls are assets, to be spent wisely. Their wishes are of no import. Their fates are written on the day they are born.Benvolio Montague, cousin to Romeo, knows all this. He expects to die for his cousin, for his house, but a spark of rebellion still lives inside him.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely - especially to anyone who loves Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. But whether you're familiar with the play or not, this story fills in a lot of the background characters and provides more info on their motivation and their actions.

What other book might you compare Prince of Shadows to and why?

None comes to mind. I've tried some of the books that attempt to expand on Jane Austen's novels, but so far I haven't found any as well done as this one.

Have you listened to any of Kyle McCarley’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first hearing of a book read by Kyle McCarley, but I've listened to samples from some of the other books he reads on audible and I'm impressed by how versatile he is. I'll definitely check these out. He does a great job of bringing the other characters to life and his gift for accents is wonderful.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Every time the author wove dialogue from the play into the story, it was so fluid that I had to remind myself that it was from the play.

    Any additional comments?

I am recommending this book to my aunt, with whom I have a shared affection for Shakespeare's plays. The blend of story and reader in this audiobook is superb. I'll listen to it again.

Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex's own powers aren't as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future-allowing him to pull off operations that have a million-to-one-chance of success. But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever's inside must be beyond powerful.

Set in 1890 Victorian England, Dark Persuasion tells a romantic story of regret, restitution, forgiveness, and redemption. It is a triangle of deceit and love fueled by emotions of selfish pursuit, guilt, and surrender among three people who are prisoners of their past.

    Story

This is a very interesting story. As a child, the hero cruelly injures a neighbor's child. As an adult, he attempts restitution without her or her family knowing that he is responsible for her injury. And his brother has become a heartless rake who has no conscience about the accident or trying to seduce vulnerable females. It's always a relief to find a story that doesn't read like a paint by numbers picture. It held my interest; I'd listen to it again.

Sebastian Ballister, the notorious Marquess of Dain, is big, bad, and dangerous to know. No respectable woman would have anything to do with the "Bane and Blight of the Ballisters", and he wants nothing to do with respectable women. He's determined to continue doing what he does best - sin and sin again - and all's going swimmingly…until the day a shop door opens and she walks in.

Alex Kingston (River Song from the 11th Doctor Who series) would make a great Jessica Trent, the heroine of this story. The banter between Jessica and Sebastian, Lord Dain, (large, dark, wealthy) kept me laughing throughout the night as I couldn't stop listening. This book is well served by this audio performance. Kate Reading nails Jessica. The side characters are also interesting, e.g., Genevieve, Jessica's femme fatale grandmother, and Bertie, Jessica's brother. Lord Dain is paranoid about women only wanting him for his money and has a very jaundiced opinion of all females.

If you want an intelligent plot and laugh-out-loud dialogue, give this one a try. It's one of my top five romances.

    Story

I wasn't sure about buying this audiobook, but I'm glad I did. There is so much more to this story than abusive sex - the dynamics of control and survivable are well written. The story made me think of people I have known or worked with whose spouses were virtual prisoners.

I bought the Kindle version because I love the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. There is also a reading companion, "BEHIND HIS EYES – CONSEQUENCES," by Aleatha Romig, "recommended to be read after completing all of the CONSEQUENCES SERIES: Consequences, Truth, and Convicted. It is not a standalone book and should not be read as such." There are upcoming releases of Behind His Eyes for "Truth" and "Convicted."

And the narrator was great. I couldn't stop listening. This book isn't for everyone, so you may want to check out the other review comments (on audible and amazon) and listen to the sample.

The prologue had me a little worried, but once I got into Chapter 1, I was hooked. Great story line, dialogue, and hair-raising adventure. The use of the Tarot's major arcana is brilliant. I really prefer this series to her adult series - no drawn out sexual speed bumps getting in the way of the story. I liked it so much I immediately downloaded the sequel, Endless Knight. I'm going to check out more of the teen and young adult books - this is my kind of story!

They call him Wee William. Though he stands nearly seven feet tall, with arms and legs the size of tree trunks and hands as big as buckets, there is nothing wee about him. His scowl alone is enough to make most men's bones rattle with fear. And women, rather than swooning, tend to run in the opposite direction. The giant Highlander is a self-proclaimed bachelor who has sworn for years that there isn't a woman in all of Scotland worth shaving his beard for - and for good reason.

I finally gave up and switched to the Kindle edition of this book. The narration sounds strained - I don't think Scottish is his first language. I notice this especially when he pronounces words that end with "-er," e.g., highlander, other. I also have trouble determining who is speaking. A narrator can greatly enhance (Tim Gerard Reynolds, Nicholas Boulton, Amanda Ronconi) an author's work or seriously detract from it as does this narrator. I wonder if the recording companies run samples of a book with possible narrators through a test group before committing to a narrator. If they don't they should, and maybe some of these obvious mis-matched narrators might be avoided.

RITA finalist and Christy Award winner Julie Klassen draws high marks from fans for her meticulous attention to detail in her inspirational historical romances. With The Tutor’s Daughter, Klassen sweeps listeners away to the blustery Cornwall coast, where Emma Smallwood and her widowed father take up residence with a baronet and his four sons. As Emma begins teaching the two youngest boys, she becomes plagued by mysterious events.

This is a pet peeve of mine, but I like an author to reveal characters through their actions and words and not tell me what they are thinking. In other words, don't tell me a character is clever, show how they are clever. This just wasn't my kind of book.
