Don't make the mistake (as I did) that this was another James Bond 007 book. It is not.
If you're listening your way thru the James Bond series, don't think you need to listen to this book so that you don't miss any history for the next book in the series. You never need to listen to this book. Do yourself a favor and skip over it.
James Bond only appears in the story somewhere near the last third, and he's not the same sort of secret agent whose exploits you're used to hearing. He rather muddles thru making uncharacteristic mistakes from which shear luck saves him.
There's no real plot....no spy thriller. It's a meandering story line about the pathetic life experiences of the female narrator. And the French Canadian accent is annoying.
Another good Connelly thriller. Unfortunately the narrator detracts from the story. A different narrator could have made this a superb listen.
Good story, but it should move along at a better pace. The narrator is tedious, and unpleasant to listen to. He sounds like he has a horrible head cold, and his reading style is mediocre.
It's amazing how a good reader improves a story, and how a poor reader drags one down. Scott Brick is a really poor narrator. He's tedious and plodding and monochromatic. I almost turned it off a few times, I hated his (lack of) style so much. I will most probably never again purchase a book read by him.
I hadn't read the book as a child. Now, as an adult, I'm addicted to listening to books whenever I can....during my commute to work, or puttering around the house doing chores. I've started listening to some of the classic titles I missed in my youth, and this is one.
The reader is very good, having different "voices" for different characters which makes dialog so much easier to follow. And, any one who listens to books knows that the reader is just as important as the story...and sometimes more important. A poor reader can kill a good story.
The story is a classic tale with dependable heros and selfless acts of courage, where good always triumphs over evil. The world is full of disappointment and sorrow, and I love a story full of hearts that are true and strong and brave and unwavering.
Good read, uh, er, listen.
Plot twists and turns. Great main character...got to love him. Expertly written as you might expect.
There's a little too much "personal drama" thrown in for my liking. Not sure if I'd listen to any other installments.
Good little story with a likeable main character. Plot twists. I'd read the next installment.
