  • Maelstrom: Destroyermen, Book 3

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Taylor Anderson
    • Narrated By William Dufris
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Lieutenant Commander Matthew Reddy, along with the men and women of the U.S.S. Walker, are once again at war. Having sided with the peaceful Lemurians against the savage, reptilian Grik, they now find themselves scrambling to prepare for the attack that is sure to come, searching for resources to support their forces - even as they look for allies to join their struggle.

David says: "Fascinating story continues to expand and evolve"
"Not as good as the first two."

I felt like most of what I am listening to is repeats from the first two books. I loved the two first books but not enough to enjoy hearing events from them being retold over and over. Taylor Anderson is not the only author that does this, but it's frankly annoying and boring. The usual excuse seems to be catering to new readers, but you shouldn't be starting with the 3th book in a series anyway.

Besides that, the story is still good, even though at times it may drag on a bit when a character goes on with some long monologue or thought. Perhaps I just have a preference for action.

  • A Feast for Crows: A Song of Ice and Fire, Book IV

    • UNABRIDGED (31 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By George R. R. Martin
    • Narrated By John Lee

It is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces, some familiar, others only just appearing, are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

    Aaron says: "No Roy Dotrice"

I wish I could return this purchase. Unfortunately I did not notice that the narrator has changed from the wonderful Roy Dotrice to someone else. It's like replacing every character in a tv series with new actors halfway through a season and just doesn't work.

I'll buy the book in print instead and read it myself. I just wish I hadn't wasted two credits.

  • The Blade Itself: The First Law: Book One

    • UNABRIDGED (22 hrs and 20 mins)
    • By Joe Abercrombie
    • Narrated By Steven Pacey

Inquisitor Glokta, a crippled and bitter relic of the last war, former fencing champion turned torturer, is trapped in a twisted and broken body - not that he allows it to distract him from his daily routine of torturing smugglers.Nobleman, dashing officer and would-be fencing champion Captain Jezal dan Luthar is living a life of ease by cheating his friends at cards. Vain and shallow, the biggest blot on his horizon is having to get out of bed in the morning to train with obsessive and boring old men.

Steven says: "Steven Pacey is magnificient."
    "Amazing trilogy"

I had just finished listening to Brandon Sanderson's fantastic The Way of Kings, was in the mood for some more fantasy and found this through a "you might also like" link. Joe Abercrombie did not disappoint. It's a great story in itself, a less magic based than Sanderson's works and what really brings it to life is the narrator. Steven Pacey is surely my new favorite narrator and I was hugely disappointed to find that he isn't reading the version of Abercrombie's "Best Server Cold" found on this site. This trilogy however is highly recommended.

  • The Way of Kings: Book One of The Stormlight Archive

    • UNABRIDGED (45 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Brandon Sanderson
    • Narrated By Kate Reading, Michael Kramer
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Katy Crumpton says: "Very enjoyable (but a slight warning)"
    "Absolutely fantastic"

Without a doubt, the best use of credits I've had on audible yet.

Brandon Sandersons always has some great and interesting magic systems and the ones in this book are not exceptions.

I am very much looking forward to the next book in this epic. More please!

  • The Lost Fleet: Valiant

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Jack Campbell
    • Narrated By Christian Rummel
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Deep within Syndicate Worlds' space, the Alliance fleet continues its dangerous journey home under the command of Captain John "Black Jack" Geary, who was revived after a century spent in suspended animation. Geary's victories over the enemy have earned him both the respect and the envy of his fellow officers.

Readalot says: "I like honorable heroes!"
    "Great books but repetitive."

Overall I like the series and I'm looking forward to the next book, but frankly the repetitions are getting annoying.
