Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last 15 years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.

This book is a fantastic book for a younger person that wont see the obvious flaws in the logic of the narrative.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

    Overall

When I saw the length of the book initially I wondered how interesting it could be. Surely there were going to be gaping moments of stagnation and slowness to the plot. I could not belive that King was able to write something on every page that left me wanting to hear more. There were so many characters how the narrator was able to keep all thier voices straight is mind boggeling. This is by far the best book I have ever listend to. It is a fantastic story that left me wondering not only about our place in the cosmos but about the ugly side of our human condition and what it is that makes some people give there best under pressure while some ultimatley do thier worst.

Towner Whitney, the self-confessed unreliable narrator of The Lace Reader, hails from a family of Salem women who can read the future in the patterns in lace, and who have guarded a history of secrets going back generations. But the disappearance of two women brings Towner home to Salem and the truth about the death of her twin sister to light.

Decent caracters that could have been more fully developed and a really compelling story line made this an enjoyable book. However, the ending was so abrupt it left me wondering if the writer just lost the steam to come up with a better ending. The caracters had more courage than the writer.
