"Enjoyable but not if it's your 1st Connelly book"
I liked it, I purchased it, but probably wouldn't listen again unless I'm out of new (to me) books. I'd restart the Bosch series if I couldn't read new books and then move back through to this one I suppose.
definitely Jack is my favorite character. I liked him from other books and loved reading about his background and what brought him to L.A.
I've never come across Buck Schirner as a narrator. I didn't mind his British pronunciations of certain words such as pedophile but I email and speak with Brits on a daily basis and often misspell American English now, myself, so it just doesn't bother me in general. I did see that some people minded his English pronunciations but his lack of the accent to go with it. I didn't even pick up on the pronunciations until I read it in the reviews after listening to the book. I think he did great. I like to just not notice the voice so I can focus on the story and I was able to, so well done.
yes..
My only additional comment would be just a suggestion. I wouldn't suggest one read this as an introduction to Connelly but I say this after having read his entire Harry Bosch series and Michael Haller series and I'm just trying to read everything he's written now. So from the standpoint of a huge fan, it was a good book for me. I probably wouldn't have gotten addicted to Connelly as an author if I'd started with this book. My first one was The Drop and then I went back adn started from the first Bosch book and went from there. That's all really. I liked getting to read about Rachel before he wrote about her in books I've already read. I believe I heard the narrator say this one was published in 1996 or so... so this was written earlier than most of what I have read from him. It was cool reading about the FBI guy in these early years that in the later books he's referenced.
"Similar to a Clancy novel, minus the Right Wing BS"
I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good action thriller with an ex-CIA black ops badass operating without a net. The main character makes me want to learn more about him. If you like Mitch Rapp books, Jack Ryan, Tom Clarke/Domingo Chavez, you will like this main character.
There is an added bonus if you are a liberal who loves espionage, military and detective novels but get annoyed with the conservative propaganda present as a theme in many books of this genre; there is little to none in this book! It just isn't pertinent. It's apolitical and a character-driven story.
It's not like the usual conservative crap is replaced with liberal propaganda. American politics are simply not part of this story which was a nice break for me since I've been ready Clancy's Jack Ryan books in order and am into Jack Jr now.
This book was good, hard to put down, and I'm thrilled to find a new series to read. This was the first book in this series that I have read but I believe it is the fourth book of the series. As soon as I submit this review, I'm going to buy the first book of this series and take a nice break from Clancy. I hope this is a long series!
I wouldn't change anything.

"Not my usual type of book, but I loved it."
I would recommend Mockingjay, and the two books before it, because they're are simply good books. My normal choices for audiobooks are espionage thrillers but I had run out of books by the authors I like, I kept trying new authors and returning the books, unable to finish because they were so boring, so I decided I'd try this series. I don't have kids, and I was pretty leery of trying the first book, but I was hooked within the first few chapters of the first book of the series. Each book was excellent, this one my favorite. I'm glad I tried a new type of book and I highly recommend it. (I am aware there is a movie about the first book, but I haven't seen it. This review is based on the book without comparison to any movie).
"A Truly Great Read"
gripping, life-affirming, relatable
Fiona... because of the dogs.
the last chapter... I don't want to spoil it.
I cried and at points laughed and the whole thing felt like it had happened to me. I was not expecting to like it this much.
This is a great book but it's one that you really don't want to put down so it's great for a beach trip or if you have time to listen without stopping much. I read a lot of crime dramas but mostly military & police main characters. A female main character was new to me and I was leery of her. But the whole story & performance was so great. I truly enjoyed it and still find myself thinking about it at times as if it were a real story and then in a millisecond remember that it was just a book. lol.
