The first book of best-selling sci-fi author Jack Campbell’s new series Beyond the Frontier returns to find Captain John “Black Jack" Geary, the hero of the Lost Fleet series, awoken from cryogenic sleep to take command of the fleet. Geary’s legendary exploits have earned him the adoration of the people—and the enmity of politicians convinced that a living hero can be a very inconvenient thing.

This book is almost like a new series in the same series. I have really enjoyed the storyline and look forward to see what happens next.

The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

Great SciFi when you can get to it. The excessive foul language and obsession with sexual content really detracts from the book. I also found myself frustrated with the extensive detail on things that simply don’t matter. At one point I actually yelled out loud while listening “Who cares?!” I would love it if someone would carve out the language, sex and stuffing. Do that and this book would really great SciFi book!

    Story

This book was all over the place. It jumps from scene to scene with people you don't know. It has a lot of promise and the background and plots look good, it is just the execution that is bad. I really wish someone else would write this story and cut to the point.

Also, be warned the language is really bad.

  • Primary Inversion: A Novel of the Skolian Empire

The Skolian Empire rules a third of the civilized galaxy through its mastery of faster-than-light communication. But war with the rival empire of the Traders seems imminent, a war that can only lead to slavery for the Skolians or the destruction of both sides. Destructive skirmishes have already occurred. A desperate attempt must be made to avert total disaster.

    Story

This story had so much potential. Great ideas, and plot, but it seamed to me that the whole story boiled down to a girl coming to grips with being terribly abused. This story may actually help someone who has gone through this, but for me I found it very depressing. I couldn’t even finish it, even with fast forwarding it.

In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles (micro-robots) has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive.

    Story

The language was so bad that it was hard to even hear the story through it. I really don’t like bad language, but this wasn’t just a matter of being offended at their choice of words. The language actually got in the way. It was like trying to see through a window with half drawn blinds. Does this author think that every person, including highly educated professionals speak like street gangs? It is disappointing to see an author so ineloquent that they must resort to using such profanity to express their ideas.

I do not recommend this book. There are many other better written titles to spend your hard earned money on, no to mention you time.
