After an unscrupulous reporter falsely accuses Boston lounge singer Lily Blake of having an affair with a newly appointed Cardinal, she’s hounded by the press, fired from her job, and robbed of all her public freedom. The humiliation and violation of privacy leaves her no choice but to retreat to her rural hometown of Lake Henry, New Hampshire. In search of refuge, Lily forms an uneasy alliance with John Kipling, a former Boston reporter with trust issues of his own.

First BD novel I have read, good story line, some nice surprises. I enjoyed how she developed the characters, showed a understanding of the complexity of families and how the past can repeat itself in next generations.

It’s a hot August Saturday on Nantucket Island. Over the course of the next 24 hours, two lives will be transformed forever. Marguerite Beale, former chef of culinary hot spot Les Parapluies, has been out of the public eye for over a decade. This all changes with a phone call from Marguerite’s goddaughter, Renata Knox. Marguerite has not seen Renata since the death of Renata’s mother, Candace Harris Knox, 14 years earlier. And now that Renata is on Nantucket visiting the family of her new fiancé, she takes the opportunity, against her father’s wishes, to contact Marguerite in hopes of learning the story of her mother’s life - and death.

I really enjoyed Elin's approach to this story, the characters were uniquely interwoven with each other, and the ending was great. A very creative approach. Very open ended in what would unfold for each of them, but not in a way to set up a sequel or series, just great writing style. It was fun to see what my mind wanted to do with the characters. I was delighted to be brought into the story that way. The "romance" of the Island & "fine dining/wine" was wonderfully unfolded in the story line.

Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack is a letter addressed to Harold from a woman he hasn't seen or heard from in 20 years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. Harold pens a quick reply and, leaving Maureen to her chores, heads to the corner mailbox. But then Harold has a chance encounter, one that convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person.

Author did a great job of delivering a fully formed story, all the characters have real weight as it unfolds. The transexual subject is a very minor part of a good mystery. The ending is perfect and a surprise!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

.R. nurse Ella Majors has seen all the misery that she can handle. But Ella soon realizes there is more sorrow in the isolated home than the little girl’s illness can account for. Harris Henderson, a single father, seems better able to deal with the wild birds he rehabilitates in his birds-of-prey sanctuary than with his own daughter. Then something magical begins to happen....

I read this series years ago when they first came out. I loved them then and its pure joy to listen again. Barbara Rosenblat's performance is the best. She captures the charters perfectly. She adds the best tonal drama as needed. I am very happy that audible has picked up this series and I intend to listen to them all!
