In an America driven to near bankruptcy with crushing foreign debt, the Talos Corporation stands out as a major success story--training soldiers and security forces from around the world and providing logistics and troops for nearly all branches of the United States government. But Talos has another plan in mind--the destruction of the federal system and constitutional law.

Much of Greg Bear's novel takes place in Texas and that is one of the things that I really liked about Mariposa. Mr. Bear's story hits a little bit too close to home because it feels so real.

First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

I have never been a fan of vampire novels, but "The Passage" retools the vampire concept and gives it an entirely intelligent, creative, and satisfying twist. Combine "The Road" with "Frankenstein." The story is literature that combines science fiction and horror interspersed with political thriller. There is a subtle undertone of evil that follows the story from beginning to end. I believe this book will become a classic. Mr. Cronin's story is nearly 40 hours long. I listened to The Passage while studying, getting ready for work, and before I went to bed. I strongly recommend listening to the unabridged version. Listening to the abridged version would be like having two or three sips of the finest wine when there is the opportunity to enjoy a full glass of that wine with a nice dinner. Skip the abridged version. And yes, I plan on reading the actual 700 page plus book in the very near future.
