I love this genre and started with Charlane Harris but have also read several other authors and enjoyed them. But this one was so bad, the heroin is a bimbo idiot and the hero is a paper thin character with nothing to him but abs. The performer makes the heroin into suchs a ditz that I started picturing her as a clueless stripper. The book also has endless amounts of sex and supposed fire between the two leads but it is so boring and redundant that I wondered if the author had ever had sex in her life. Pick any book but this one and save yourself the time and money. I bailed after about an hour. In traffic no less. I was kind of facinated that while being bored out of my mind I was also constantly rolling my eyes.
Sheesh, this story is endless and nothing changes. What makes this book so bad is that it focuses on all the loser characters. You could have skipped this book and not missed any of the story. Lets hope the next book has something interesting or some character development.
I have read all the Lily Bard series up to this and will go no farther. Lily is a cold, self centered, man hating, judgmental shrew. There I no getting around it.
I can see why Neil Gaiman likes this guy. He can create a sceen and make it come to life with a creative resonance that is facinating to listen to. Just awesome. However, the reason I only gave it three starts is that nothing really happens in the story and this incredible writing can only get it so far.
In fact, I stopped listening to it about 4/5 through the book, but I plan to get back too it later. One reason was that their is this sex sceen that was just a little too wierd and graphic. But man, can this guy write...amazing.
There are a lot of wonderful, fun books out there. This is not one of them. Do yourself a favor and move on.
Wow, what a boring dog of a book. I could not finish because I could not stay interested. Nothing about this book worked. Silly story, boring character, boring narrator. I refereneced the Sandman Slim books in the title but really feel I'm doing Sandman Slim a disservice by even mentioning him in a sentence with this lame book's main character Bobby Dollar.
Boring, boring, boring.
This book was just plain fun. Lots of strong language so it is not for the faint of heart but several of the scenes just cracked me up both in the timing of the funny lines but also in the descriptive explosive horror. The guys room mate is just a beer drinking chain smoking head and his girlfriend is a monster. Does it get any better than that.
The story was just short of average with huge plot holes throughout. The psychotic lead needed a bullet in the head as far as I was concerned. Every character in the entire book was a bad apple and seemed to be a child beating rapist. Shouldn't every book have a least one character that is worth bonding with.
Another thing that always drives me crazy in books like this is how they have these incredible powers but still ignore them. It just does not make any sense. "Oh, I'm a powerful and rare stone elemental but really don't want to ever use my power", get real.
If you are super bored and there is nothing else in your library then put this on. Ignore the nasty characters, redundant descriptions, huge plot holes and try to get your commute finished.
I loved the Dresden Files so purchase this book. It was so bad that I checked to make sure there were not two Jim Butchers. Nothing is worse that reading a book that makes no sense. The character motivations make no sense, the plot makes no sense, the magic makes no sense. In this world everybody has access to incredibly powerful elemental forces but nobody seems to know the basics and they forget to use them as they die in droves. Oops, I forgot I could fly away, or create powerful stone creatures so I died...
The narator is really bad as well. By the end of the book I hated the young hero with a passion.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series; however, the second book was slow paced and dragged tremendously. In fact the first 3 files has nothing happening at all except for moral discussions between the characters. I will still finish the series because I drive a lot for work. But if I was reading this at home I would have put the second book in the trash bin and would not buy the third.
