  • Bailout: An Inside Account of How Washington Abandoned Main Street While Rescuing Wall Street

An insider of both the Bush and Obama administrations offers an irrefutable indictment of the mishandling of the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program bailouts and the extreme degree to which our government officials—from both parties—served the interests of Wall Street at the expense of the public. From his first day on the job as the special inspector general in charge of overseeing the distribution of the bailout money, Neil Barofsky found that the officials at the Treasury Department in charge of the bailouts were in thrall to the interests of the big banks.

Former President Bush often gets a bad rap, and often rightfully so, for his handling of the economy but after reading 'Bailout', shame should fall on the Obama administration and especially the Treasury Department and it's head secretary Geithner. The duty of the Inspector General is to protect the tax payer so who would have thought that his biggest obstacle would be our own Government under Geithner. If this book does not make you mad, nothing will.

Newly appointed CIA director Dr. Irene Kennedy is the target of an inside plot to destroy her and prematurely end the American President's term. To make matters worse, Saddam Hussein is close to entering the nuclear arms race - something Israel has vowed to stop. With the haunting specter of World War III looming, the president calls on his secret weapon: top counter-terrorism operative Mitch Rapp. But with only two weeks to take out the nukes, Rapp is up against a ticking clock - and impossible odds.

I really enjoy the Mitch Rapp series and I am so glad this was not my first Vince Flynn, Mitch Rapp audiobook. If it was I might not have ever listened to another and got to enjoy the series as much as I do. Separation of Power is a disappointment. It lacked the imagination of the other books in this series that I have listened to. It dwelt too long on Mitch Rapp's girlfriend and her anger that Mitch works for the CIA and is unpredictable in his behavior. The action sections when Mitch was his super self were brief and often not so super, kind of sub-super. The narrator did a decent job but when you are used to George Guidall, this too is a disappointment. Please read or listen to the Mitch Rapp series but please don't start with this book.

John Maddox Roberts takes listeners back to a Rome filled with violence and evil. Vicious gangs ruled the streets of Crassus and Pompey, routinely preying on plebeian and patrician alike. So the garroting of a lowly ex-slave and the disembowelment of a foreign merchant in the dangerous Subura district seemed of little consequence to the Roman hierarchy.

The celebrated 2010 HBO miniseries The Pacific, winner of eight Emmy Awards, was based on two classic books about the War in the Pacific, Helmet for My Pillow and With The Old Breed. Audible Studios, in partnership with Playtone, the production company co-owned by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and creator of the award-winning HBO series Band of Brothers, John Adams, and The Pacific, as well as the HBO movie Game Change, has created new recordings of these memoirs, narrated by the stars of the miniseries.

A great history of a tough breed of everyday guys rose to the challenge and in the face or hardship and death became heroes. The narration was great. There was a humbleness about the author who lived and fought through that troubled time. You will not be disappointed.

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

No doubt, Stephen King is a great writer and for most listeners this book received glowing reviews but for me it was not only far to long but several times lost it way stumbling to the end. It started off great but soon became distracted into a love story. OK, a love story would be fine but not for hours and hours. For me, King could have stuck to the premise of stopping Oswald and left the rest for a romance novel.

It was the last-chance moment of the war. In January 2007, President George W. Bush announced a new strategy for Iraq. He called it "the surge". "Many listening tonight will ask why this effort will succeed when previous operations to secure Baghdad did not. Well, here are the differences," he told a skeptical nation. Among those listening were the young, optimistic Army infantry soldiers of the 2-16, the battalion nicknamed the Rangers.

I had read a lot of positive reviews about this book and that was the reason for my purchase. Unfortunately I was disappointed and left to wonder what those other reviewers heard in the book that I missed. I enjoy military related novels and I served in the military so there is a natural attraction to a well written story about war. But this book just did not hold my interest. Some times with a good book you just can't put it down and other times with a so so book you can't wait for the phone to ring, that is this book. At times I thought of just giving up and stop reading but I hung in there to the end, well almost the end.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A performance so poignant, we gave Bronson Pinchot (yes, Balki from Perfect Strangers) our inaugural Narrator of the Year award.... In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. But two people stand in his way.

It's just seven days before Memorial Day, and a spike in CIA intelligence has pointed to a major terrorist attack on the United States. Now it's up to counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp to pull out all the stops. Rapp immediately leaves for Afghanistan, where he leads a special forces unit on a daring commando raid across the border into a remote Pakistani village. Their target: an al-Qaeda stronghold. Rapp and his team soon discover plans for a catastrophic nuclear attack on Washington, DC.

I really enjoy Vince Flynn and his Mitch Rapp series and despite my disappointment in this story line I will keep reading all his books I can get my hands on. What disappointed me with Memorial Day was that the plot was weak and the usual tension was missing. It did not keep me on the edge of my seat waiting to turn the page. I am not saying don't read this book but perhaps explore some of his other books first.
