"please don't buy this"
I love animals and don't like to see any living thing suffer unnecessarily. BUT, PETA is extremist and misguided. They think nothing of threatening people's lives and mental health through acts of terrorism in order to carry out their misguided attempts to "free" lab animals, often dooming them to worse suffering in the elements.
If you like PETA and think they are a good thing, please do yourself a favor and find a way to obtain a balanced view of the facts.
"Three and a half stars, actually"
I found this book to be very uneven. I liked the first hour or so, though I was appalled by the danger these children found themselves in due to their extremely neglectful parents. I then got tired of hearing one woeful tale after another, for several hours. The heroine grew on me, though, so I felt hooked enough to continue listening. The last hour was disappointing, as it read more like a quick outline, "this happened, and then this happened ..." - several years summarized in very short order. Still, I would recommend the book. Just be prepared.
