  • Someone Knows My Name

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 7 mins)
    • By Lawrence Hill
    • Narrated By Adenrele Ojo
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Aminata Diallo is the beguiling heroine of Lawrence Hill's Someone Knows My Name. In it, Hill exquisitely imagines the tale of an 18th-century woman's life, spanning six decades and three continents. The fascinating story that Hill tells is a work of the soul and the imagination. Aminata is a character who will stir listeners, from her kidnapping from Africa through her journeys back and forth across the ocean.

    "Book of Negroes"

My friend in Toronto told me I must read this book. So, I looked for the title it goes by in Canada, The Book of Negroes. I couldn't find it at first and then as I was about to order it from a Canadian bookseller, I noticed that the cover was the same as a book here called Someone Knows My Name.
My detective work finished, I can now say that this book is as good as my friend said, even better. The reader follows Aminata Diallo from her kidnapping in Africa, at age eleven, to her enslavement in South Carolina, then on to New York, Nova Scotia, and eventually London. The narrator, Adenrele Ojo, is fabulous and truly brings the story to life.

  • Four Fires

    • UNABRIDGED (29 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Bryce Courtenay
    • Narrated By Humphrey Bower

The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

Robert says: "Hit in the solar plexus"
"Courtney & Bower- a winning combination"

I just finished Four Fires. I loved it from start to finish. I read it following Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken and it was the perfect match. Everything I have ever read about WWII has been about the Holocaust. Both of these novels give an entirely different perspective - that of what it was like in the Japanese POW camps.
Bryce Courtney and Humphrey Bower have once again proved to be a fantastic combination.

  • The Butterfly Man

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Heather Rose
    • Narrated By Humphrey Bower

On November 7, 1974, a young English nanny named Sandra Rivett was murdered in London's West End. Her employer, Lord Lucan, was named as her attacker. It was widely assumed he had mistaken her for his wife. Lord Lucan disappeared the night Sandra Rivett died and has not been seen since. Henry Kennedy lives on a mountain on the other side of the world. He is not who he says he is. Is he a murderer, or a man who can never clear his name? And is he the only one with something to hide?

SuperLuckyCat says: "Loved everything about this story"

Just about anything Humphrey Bower reads is worth listening to. Coupled with the authors that he chooses to read for, one has a perfect match.
This particular story is both heart-warming and heart-wrenching. Although I knew all about the Cray Brothers, I was not familiar with the other historical facts in this novel. I enjoyed that fact that it leaves you guessing (especially if you listen to the credits at the end!)
