In this first-person account of becoming the FBI's top serial-killer hunter and a member of a religious order in an attempt to discern the true nature of good and evil, Roger L. Depue searches for an understanding of how evil develops. Between Good and Evil is Depue's look back at a life spent apprehending criminals, especially serial killers, first as a small-town police chief, then an FBI-SWAT team member, Behavioral Sciences Unit chief, and a developer of revolutionary law enforcement programs.

Victor says: "an autobiography more than a career retrospective"
    "Fascinating"
    Overall

This book was a fascinating listen and the narrator was quite good. Although the book is largely about his life, it adds wonderful context to his career as an FBI profiler and the origins of this science.

Pete Dizinoff never counted on a wild card: Laura, his best friend's daughter - 10 years older than his son, Alec, and irresistibly beautiful, with a past so shocking that it's never spoken of. When Laura sets her sights on Alec, Pete sees his plans for his son not just unraveling but being destroyed. Believing he has only the best of intentions, he sets out to derail this romance and rescue his son. He could never have foreseen how his world would shatter in the process.

I have to agree with the other reviewer. I stuck this through to the end but I don't know why. The characters were all extremely unlikeable and the narration just didn't work.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

    "Don't Miss This Book"
    Overall

This book was absolutely incredible, and may now be my favorite audible so far. My book club read this book a couple of months ago, and although everyone loved it, I felt that I got something special from listening to it. The narrators are absolutely fabulous and bring the book and most importantly, the characters to life. Jenna Lamia won me over in her narration of the Secret Life of Bees, and her voice and timing were spot on again. The voices of the other women were fantastic and imparted a poignancy and humor that I think would have not been as recognizable had I read this book, although the writing is also superb. Do not miss the book.

  • The Garden of Last Days: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 28 mins)

Set in the seamy underside of American life at the moment before the world changed, it juxtaposes lust for domination with hunger for connection, sexual violence with family love. It seizes the listener by the throat with the same psychological tension, depth, and realism that characterized Andre Dubus' #1 bestseller, House of Sand and Fog, and has an even greater sense of the dark and anguished places in the human heart.

    "Disappointing"
    Overall

I also loved House of Sand and Fog, but read that book instead of listening to the audio version so I don't know if that made a difference. I found the story somewhat interesting and once I got into it, I wanted to see it through. I do agree with many of the other reviewers...I did not like any of the characters and although I found the story somewhat interesting, I didn't really find myself very interested in what happened to any of them. I thought the narrator was okay, but I really disliked the way he narrated for the women. He made them all sound exactly alike, whiny, and the although the dialogue may have been written well, the way he emphasized certain words and tried to convey emotion made most of the female dialogue sound fake, contrived and not believable.

All children mythologize their birth... So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's beloved collection of stories, long famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale. The enigmatic Winter has always kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she summons a biographer to tell the truth about her extraordinary life: Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth remains an ever-present pain.

This book was beautifully written and the narration was mesmerizing and so perfect for this novel. If you only listen to one book this year, this should be it.

    "The Secret History"
    Overall

I am relatively new to the audiobook scene, but I don't need a lot of audio listens under my belt to recommend this book. The plot is fascinating and the characters so well developed. The author's narration is excellent...I was disappointed when the 21 hours were over. Every aspect of this selection was a winner.
