The celebrated 2010 HBO miniseries The Pacific, winner of eight Emmy Awards, was based on two classic books about the War in the Pacific, Helmet for My Pillow and With The Old Breed. Audible Studios, in partnership with Playtone, the production company co-owned by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and creator of the award-winning HBO series Band of Brothers, John Adams, and The Pacific, as well as the HBO movie Game Change, has created new recordings of these memoirs, narrated by the stars of the miniseries.

First of all Sledge does an amazing job of creating an immersive experience that allows the reader to connect with the true heroes who fought and died during the less recognized War of the Pacific. Sledge's story telling ability provides an amazing firsthand experience that is so powerful you feel the intensity, emotion, fear, humor, horror, comradery, suffering, etc. This book is truly outstanding by itself, but the fact that Joseph Mazello, who played Eugene Sledge in the 2010 award winning HBO miniseries The Pacific, is the narrator the Audible edition elevates it from outstanding to phenomenal!

There are many opinions about how to approach books that have been made into movies. Some prefer to read first and then watch, while others watch first and then read, but regardless of your preference if you are a fan of military history and/or the HBO miniseries The Pacific I highly recommend paring the HBO miniseries with the listening of this audio book. I actually made the choice to intertwine them by listening to sections of the audio book and then transitioned to watching corresponding sections of the HBO miniseries, which for me created the most memorable and engaging Audible experience I have had thus far out of the nearly 700 Audible books I have listened to.

I nearly passed on this one due to not being a big fan of the movie, but so glad I gave it a shot. This book is completely different from the movie and a fun read. I was greatly entertained by the fast passed action and the witty humor that Davy injects that made me laugh out loud multiple times as I listened. I am looking forward to continuing with the series and am hopeful that the rest of book continue with the quality of the first.

    1. Jumper - 10 hrs & 49 min
    2. Reflex - 12 hrs & 43 min
    3. Impulse - 11 hrs & 33 min
    4. Jumper Griffin’s Story - 6 hrs & 51 min
    5. Exo - 15 hrs & 58 min

I recommend reading reviews of the other books in the series before committing to the series as there are significant varied opinions about how the story progresses between each book, but the series overall has very high ratings. I am hopeful to update this review once I have completed the series and provide improved review details.

Frank W. Abagnale was one of the most daring conmen, forgers, imposters, and escape artists in history. In his brief but notorious criminal career, Abagnale donned a pilot's uniform and copiloted a Pan Am jet, masqueraded as the supervising resident of a hospital, practiced law without a license, passed himself off as a college sociology professor, and cashed over $2.5 million in forged checks, all before he was 21. His story is now a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.

As would be expected the book is better then the movie and is highly recommended. It is important to know that the ending of the book does not go into the later details about Frank's life that the movie does, which makes the ending somewhat abrupt. Despite the ending this is an excellent, informative, and highly entertaining book that is hard to stop listening to!

Books 1, 2, and the prequel novella of the Fate's Forsaken series. The series follows the adventures of Kael: a young man who is thrust from his home in the Unforgivable Mountains and onto a hero's path. The journey is long, the battles are fierce - nearly all of his companions are outlaws. And Kael's rotten bad luck seems to make everything worse. This is his story.

Getting 2.3 books and 37+ hours of quality Fantasy for only one credit seemed too good to be true, but these first two books of the series were far better than I hoped! But wait there is more! For the same low price you also get the bonus short story called Poison, which was enjoyable too!

When a plane crashed in the quaint town of Castor, it unleashed a virus that turned everyone into hissing, blood-thirsty, undead monsters. Monsters that could transmit their plague in seconds, that could run as fast as dogs, and that could fuse themselves together to create massive mutated beasts. Four teens - Connor, Seth, Amanita, and Nicole - fought for their lives to secure vital data from the plane wreckage, some of them paying the ultimate sacrifice. Now they need to get to San Diego with their secret, but the plague is spreading too fast.

The first Hissers book was released in Audible on 07-26-11 and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I have read/listened to a great deal of undead themed books, but the unique aspects of Hissers and the unexpected twists made it a story that has stuck with me. I have been checking the Audible library on and off over the past 5+ years hoping to find the 2nd Hissers book. I was so excited that Audible finally added Hissers II: Death March on 06-22-17, which is the second book of the expected trilogy!

If you liked the first book getting the second one is a no brainier, and if you have not read the first Hissers book, STOP NOW and go get it!

The biggest issue with Hissers II is that it is simply too short and after such a long wait I was hoping to get more. That being said, I did enjoy the 2nd installment to the continuation of the Hissers story. I was pleasantly surprised that even though the second book had a different narrator the transition between books was fairly smooth as Shawn Zuzek did a good job of integrating his narration with that of the first book.

Hissers II definitely requires the reader be willing to stretch the limitations of reality and there are quiet a few situations that are challenging to accept, but if you are willing to allow yourself to simply jump in and go with it, the ride is fast paced and entertaining. I really have enjoyed both Hissers books and I am hoping that the wait for the third book will not be as long of a wait as it has been for the 2nd one!

It's the last weekend of summer break in the small town of Castor, and four teenage friends are about to attend the most popular end-of-summer high-school party in town… with a massive wave of mutated undead about to crash the party. It's The Breakfast Club meets Resident Evil as the teens of Castor fight to stay alive.

With the overwhelming amount of undead themed books out there it was a treat to find such a unique twist to the undead chaos in Hissers. Even though this is classified as Young Adult and the main characters are 14 years old the story line is complex, characters are well developed and intriguing, and it is full of action for all ages. There is a fair amount of foul language, but it is primarily used in the development of one of the primary characters and as an appropriate response to being chased by undead creatures who are wanting to eat you while they are F%#&ing hissing.

I am a big fan of undead and apocalypse genre, but unfortunately many of the books in the genre are disappointingly predictable and sadly many of them use very similar storylines. The author does a great job of working in several unexpected moments that significantly shocked me and made the book even more entertaining. The narration by Andrews is well done and he helped further enriched the characters and story telling. If you are considering this book I highly recommend pulling the trigger and taking a chance.

Bonus info: Hissers was released in Audible on 07-26-11 and on 06-22-17 Audible just added the second book Hissers II: Death March, which is the second book of the expected trilogy. If you end up liking the first book getting the second one is a no brainier with the only major negative is that it is too short. Have FUN!

America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

The book was interesting, was written well, and nicely narrated all of which did keep me engaged as I listened. Unfortunately there was just not enough depth in the storyline and despite being in a post-apocalyptic world the struggles that are faced seem too mild and things generally seem to workout with too much of a Pollyanna dynamic. I am still glad I chose to read it, but I'm also glad it is a short book.

Joe Abercrombie brings the fantasy alive. I was amazed throughout the series with how well the character and story development is. He also does an excellent job with the transition between various character's stories/experiences, which keeps the story from slowing down and enhances the reading experience. These transitions are unique in that they are not confined to each book, but rather intertwine throughout the series.

The author shows respect to his readers with the beginning of each book by not wasting the first few chapters recapping the previous book I just finished! With each book I found myself making more and more time for listening to the story, as well as sacrificing sleep as I could not stop listening.

Even though each book is written with such quality that they can be read independently I highly recommend reading the books in order. By following the series it will allow the reader to fully enjoy the many nuances of each book and escape deeper into story and world of fantasy. Here is the chronologic order:

    The Blade Itself - 2006
Before They Are Hanged - 2007
Last Argument of Kings - 2008
    Best Served Cold - 2009
    The Heroes - 2011
    Red Country - 2012

All the books in this series earned 5 stars in all categories from me and is the first series other than Lord of the Rings that I have read more than once and found it to be even better than the first read.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Peter Clines does a great job of intertwining suspension, good character development, humor and just the right amount of fantasy. If you are reading this review please stop, make the purchase and start reading! There are so many great reviews for this book I will not waste time reiterating what others have already said. Read and enjoy.
