Khaled Hosseini, the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations.

This was so dark and depressing we didn't finish the first CD. We were on a road trip and my sister in law asked me to stop playing it.

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

What would have made The Casual Vacancy better?

A better story line. I expected more from J.K. Rowling.

What was most disappointing about J. K. Rowling’s story?

The horrible language. The story line is so weak. The characters so sad.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tom Hollander?

    The narrator is fine.

What character would you cut from The Casual Vacancy?

    All of them

    Any additional comments?

There was no need for such horrible language. The constant swearing was offensive. I am not even going to finish this book it's so bad.
