Councilman Golan Trevize is wondering if he was right to choose a collective mind as the best possible future for humanity over the anarchy of contentious individuals, nations and planets. To test his conclusion, he decides he must know the past and goes in search of legendary Earth, all references to which have been erased from galactic libraries. The societies encountered along the way become arguing points in a book-long colloquy about man's fate, conducted by Trevize and traveling companion Bliss, who is part of the first world/mind, Gaia.

I'll keep this short, it's really difficult and jarring to go from a high quality narrator like Scott Brick to Larry McKeever. I'm sure that Larry on his own is a quality narrator, but when compared to Scott Brick it seems like amateur hour. I also find it difficult to go from Edge of Foundation where Scott Brick's voice is established as Trevise etc and then go to McKeever voicing the same characters, it's a bit odd.

This would have been much better with Brick narrating.

The sand-blasted world of Arrakis has become green, watered, and fertile. Old Paul Atreides, who led the desert Fremen to political and religious domination of the galaxy, is gone. But for the children of Dune, the very blossoming of their land contains the seeds of its own destruction. The altered climate is destroying the giant sandworms, and this in turn is disastrous for the planet's economy.

Personally I believe that this installment in the Dune series is better than the 2nd but not as good as the original Dune. The lore will immerse you and the characters are dramatic. My only complaint with this one is that the ending is somewhat anti-climatic. There's significant build up and suspense only to be left a little bit disappointed by the ending. What happens with the Farad'n character is especially anti-climatic. All in all though, it's an excellent listen.

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Karen says: "A classic book *and* a classic audiobook"
    "Beautiful"
    Overall

This is a beautiful tale of one incredible life story. This tale offers so much in the ranges of emotion. You feel incredibly saddened, angry and humored all at the same time. McCourt's quasi-American/Irish accent makes the audio version a joy to listen to. Tis' a good book it is, Tis' some class of a well written memoir.

  • Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

"Great novel, narration not so hot.."
    Overall

The content of the novel itself is very good no matter how twisted and disgusting some of the events and characters were. It's an intriguing take on the origins of the Wicked Witch of the West and brings vivid life to the world of OZ that seemed so silly and unbelievable prior to this book. My only gripe is that the narration at times was very distracting and distinguishing between characters at the beginning was a chore.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Dune is an amazing Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel. I will be re-listening to this one in the future and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next few novels in the series.
