"A wonderful book"
This book had the right combination of an excellent story and an excellent reader. I would put it as one of my top favorite audiobooks. It has the rare quality of being a book which I would listen to repeatedly.
The book, coupled with the narritor's accent, were enchanting. It was easy to get caught up in the world of the story.
"so-so"
On the plus side: parts were very creative and entertaining. Good suspense building. The characters were interesting and well developed. On the minus side: other part were s-l-o-w. So slow. And the story was missing the dog and the quirky humor normally found in a Koontz story. It's a good use of a credit if you want something to moderately entertain you for a long time. The narration felt "over-the-top" at first, but I got used to it and at times appreciated the extra interest it added.
"So many choices"
As good as the movie was, this book is orders of magnitude better. I had struggled with whether to choose the abridged, with Ms. Foster, or the unabridged. I am glad I chose the unabridged. As fan of science, I enjoyed hearing Dr. Sagan’s perspective on science and religion and I suspect those passages were what got chopped in the abridged. Those plus there were times when the plot wandered about. So if you’d rather focus on the main plot line, the abridged might be a better choice.
Laurel Lefkow’s narration was excellent. Only one of the accents annoyed me, the New York street accent. But honestly, that’s not her fault – she was true to the description of the accent given in the book.
Whichever version you chose, you will not be unhappy. It’s a great audiobook, well worth the listen.
"a good friend"
A good book is like a good friend and Patrick Rothfuss' stories have been good friends to me. They have kept me company on road trips and through chores and many quiet evenings. I was sad to get to the end of them. The narration was stellar. If you like a good story you will enjoy these books.
"The best audio book I have yet experienced"
I took a chance on this one and was so glad I did. I thought it would keep me entertained in the car, but ended up listening to it whenever I had a free moment. And thinking about it the rest of the time! The story draws you in, emotionally as well as intellectually. And there is scifi, but the "sci" part is along biological lines. I would recommend it to any one.
"New favorite!"
The story. At times, it was the creepiest and scariest thing I have yet listened too. But there is a credible, uplifting side as well. And of course, a dog. Dean Koontz is terrific about writing about dogs.
One of the best reading performaces I have experienced. I honestly think I would not have enjoyed reading the book as much as listening. Her interpretation added tremendously to the experience.
