This was the book that hooked me into the series. A very unique story, Sci-Fi and fantasy mix with a huge upgrade in narration. Muller takes a little while to get into it. The first six hours he tended to end his sentences weird. But once you get comfortable with his style, the voices he uses absorbs you into the book. This was an easy five star rating. I only wish all 7 books were like this.
If you continue on with the other books you will find that it doesn't last. You will lose Muller in book 5 through 7, an unfortunate accident ended his career. Even the stories seem to lose uniqueness and become drawn out. At least, though, you get some great books in the middle like this one.
Seemed the book was more bent on describing a piece of history versus developing a plot and building characters. Narration was excellent and that saved the story for me. It wasn't a bad use of 6 hours of my life, but don't start listening to Eric Ambler books with this one.
If you have not tried Goddard, go for it. If you like his style this book will not disappoint. Few authors can pull off a style that always intrigues the listener and makes one get into the characters. Goddard is exceptional in this regard. All of his books are great buys. This one is no exception.
Probably a better book to read. Narrators lost me. Just did not gain momentum. Not terrible and may look at another book by the author but would be hard pressed to recommend this audiobook.
Plot and characters are solid. Narrator great. Good choice for espionage. Not a five star bowl you over book but close and keeps you involved and wanting to get back in the car.
Wow. A great audiobook. Writing and narrative are top rate. Not my usual genre but I would get this author's books anytime. Great buy. Won't lose on this one.
The first few books of Baldacci were amazing. Now anytime I try to get back into his writing it seems a little too cookbook. Narrator was good for the type of book and having two narrators were even better. I was hoping for a leap to the past to his original books. This was note quite it. Not bad though and if you love espionage genre this will be better than most. Just not good enough for me to go to another Baldacci book. Off to another author.
Why I did not know that book five was not the last book I don't know. It should have been evident in book four when the plot stalled out. Book five does a little better job moving the plot forward, at least the last 10% of the book does. Still a lot of fluff. Boring conversations still dominate. I don't remember any of these drag on conversations in the first three books. Someone must have pulled Martin aside after book three and told him there was money to be made if he dragged out the series for a few more books. There is just such a dramatic shift from books 1-3 to books 4 and 5. I have to imagine if he is going to wrap up this series in 7 books, then book six has to refocus the plot when it comes out. If it doesn't, this series may never end. Dotrice is limping to the finish line, not a terrible job, only the female characters suffer greatly. But how is he going to do two more books. A little worried Dotrice skills are on the decline and book six could be ruined because of it. Oh well, too late to change now.
After three great books, the story just plummets into mediocrity. I have read the reviews and they slam Dotrice but I would equally slam Martin. I actually give Dotrice a little break given how many characters and the difficulty in the performance (that being said, Dotrice is clearly off his game in this book). It is the story I was most upset about. What happened to all of the great characters, the action, and the plot. This is a book of a few characters talking a lot and barely inching the plot along. Almost felt like filler material to make this a five book series. I have to imagine all of the interesting characters come back in book 5. I know some of my friends stopped this series have way through this book and now I know why. Despite my disappointment I will trudge forward to book 5.
Great writing with narration is always a winner. Given how large the scope of these books are, Martin pulls it off again. Several story lines that all have rich characters and intense action. Off to book 4. Highly recommend this series, at least up to this point.
Another great audiobook! This series is excellent. I am only hoping it can keep up the momentum. I have been let down so many times with other series as you get to the end. So far this series is getting better. I would think almost anyone can get into this series unless violence is a turn off. Off to book three.
