"Down With UP"
Positive thinking, goal setting, do/be/have anything circles the drain, gurgle, belch, as Burkeman reintroduces us to Stoicism, Zen and human mortality. This well written blend of philosophy, culture criticism, reporting and humor confronts the absurd idea that avoiding awful thinking insures health, wealth and happiness. This is my favorite nonfiction work for 2012.
"Make Time for Hearing Charades"
This is undoubtedly one of the best books ever written in the English language. Somehow I missed Turner Hospital's award winning literary fiction prior to this Audio experience. Charades is a tightly woven character revealed to us in exquisitely visual, scented tangents during her year-long enchantment with and of a brilliant physicist who is twice her age but a few bosons short of a field. The story unfolds in relationship possibilities which impacted me emotionally somewhere between Slaughterhouse Five and The Solitude of Prime Numbers, yet resolves into an elegant solid. If you really love good writing, don't listen to Charades while driving or working with sharp objects.
"don't even bother"
the narrator sounds like an auctioneer. the pace is too frantic. the book might be good, bad or even tolerable, but I can't get around the narration to find out.
"Enjoy a wonderful post-apocalyptic social life"
Jeanne Martinet's delightful chick lit/scifi/comportment/adventure reminded me why I search through Audible's new releases every week for 'first' novels. This is definitely a must listen, especially for people who just want to curl up with a good listen. Etiquette delivers accomplished writing, romance, mystery, true love, conflict, a dash of techno paranoia, fun characters and laugh out loud one liners. It's a good start to post 2012 living. Don't miss this one.
"Take an exciting ride in Gay Deceiver"
This book was written for those of us who grew up checking cereal boxes, just in case, because smart girls need spacesuits too! About a year ago I begged Audible for this book. Let's face it, we aren't getting any younger, and no large print editions were available. Experiencing this book in audio is truly a wild ride in the Gay Deceiver as it should be done, voice and ears only! This is a MUST LISTEN for Heinlein fans.
"Sumptuous!"
My hunger for Rice's images - sights, sounds, smells - and characters of pure psycho emotional conflicted flesh, lured me to The Wolf's table starved, deprived. The Wolf Gift is a lavish feast for those of us who love her writing. This was my first Audible of a Rice novel and HEARING The Wolf Gift may have mutated my dorsal root gangilon. Needless to say I'm downloading her other Audible books starting now.
"more parallel universes than heinlein"
this guy is a good writer. he brings all that science channel and history channel stuff into theoretical models i can actually follow
"Masterful Enchantment"
Morgenstern paints with words, animates in deep relatedness. Night Circus is delicious, exquisite word weaving. I haven't experienced anything this in years. Mystery, romance, suspense and incredible storytelling.
Baily, forced into the story on a dare from his insensitive sister, becomes as involuntarily love driven to the heart of the circus as everyone else - an archtypical hero skillfully plucked from the mundane - embraces the waning lifeforce offered him and steps into his destiny.
Dale seems to understand exactly how and when to use his voice to move from scene to scene, character to character, mood to mood and executes a flawless performance.
OMG this kid can really write ! ! !
well that's how i'm subjecting my e mails to friends. why would i want to rename this work when the name fits like a small white glove?
read and listen to this work. it's astounding
