In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

OK, you hooked me into the series with book one. You do need to reedit the audio book, there were multiple passages re-read.by the narrator.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

This is not the type of book I usually read, but happened to see that it was given so many five star reviews that I could not resist a peek. I could not stop listening and spent two days doing nothing else. It touched my heart and rate it up there with one of my other favorites "Fried green Tomatos." A great listen, girls you did a wonderful job. I pass on the five stars for you.

This true modern masterpiece is built around the two fateful words that make up the title and herald the end - “Alas, Babylon.” When a nuclear holocaust ravages the United States, a thousand years of civilization are stripped away overnight, and tens of millions of people are killed instantly. But for one small town in Florida, miraculously spared, the struggle is just beginning, as men and women of all backgrounds join together to confront the darkness....

I had to recheck to see that this book was really written in 1959. I have heard of the book for years, but never read it because I felt it would be sadly outdated . It could still be used today as a survival guide to nucular war.
