Virgil's always been known for having a somewhat active, er, social life, but he's probably not going to be getting too many opportunities for that during his new case. While competing in a fishing tournament in a remote area of northern Minnesota, he gets a call from Lucas Davenport to investigate a murder at a nearby resort.

i think this is the 3rd in sandford's "Virgil Flowers" series that i've listened to. I've enjoyed them all. Not the same as the Davenport series, but i think i like them just as much. Narration was good, story was good... i don't ask for much more.

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

This was a story without like-able characters. Granted, the main character is thrown into quite a difficult life situation, but *everyone* is either cruel or lazy or just... disinterested. The actual mystery did have some interesting parts, but there was little to no action, and again, you had to wade thru such a pitiful group of people that it wasn't worth the journey.

One late fall Sunday in southern Minnesota, a farmer brings a load of soybeans to a local grain elevator - and a young man hits him on the head with a steel bar, drops him into the grain bin, waits until he's sure he's dead, and then calls the sheriff to report the "accident." Suspicious, the sheriff calls in Virgil Flowers, who quickly breaks the kid down...and the next day the boy's found hanging in his cell. Remorse? Virgil isn't so sure....

I've enjoyed all of the Vrigil Flowers novels, but this is probably my least favorite. Nothing specific really, just didn't like the story as much as the last 2 i guess. Still worth a listen, and i will definitiely get the next one as well.

Good story, good characters, and good narration. Sometimes a little heavy on the "alphabet soup" of acronyms and jargon for this-or-that agency, but in all an enjoyable book.

It is 1951 in America, the second year of the Korean War. Marcus Messner of Newark, New Jersey, is beginning his sophomore year at the pastoral, conservative Winesburg College in Ohio. Why is he here? Because his father, a hard-working neighborhood butcher, seems to have gone mad.

    JOHN says: "Brilliant"
"I enjoyed this, short but funny"
    Overall

This was a quick little story. I tend to read crime fiction, but this "slice of life" story was a pleasant change of pace. I found it amusing and enjoyable, but fyi, it's not all laughs. I guess it surprised me in places too. The naration and sound quality were very good. I almost feel like summarizing by saying "it's good, if you like that kind of thing", but i know that's not much help... It is short, so no harm in trying it.

Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, the lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House.

Carl Cravens says: "Different, but good."
    "Poor... can't recommend this one."
    Overall

The audio quality on this recording was poor, and it was quiet. So in order to hear, you have to turn it up so high that you hear noise. Add to the that the fact that the story was fairly dull, and not scary at all, and you have a pretty bad experience. Sorry to say that, i don't give many bad reviews, but i really disliked this one (and was stuck on a road trip with this as my companion, so not many options.)

All children mythologize their birth... So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's beloved collection of stories, long famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale. The enigmatic Winter has always kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she summons a biographer to tell the truth about her extraordinary life: Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth remains an ever-present pain.

PA Law says: "Haunting and beautiful tale"
    "An Excellent Story"
    Overall

As many have said, this really is an excellent story. If you're looking for an "action adventure", this isn't it, but it really is a thoughtful, well-written, and interesting novel. The narration was perfect as well.

I generally lean towards crime fiction, so this was quite different, but a welcome break. Yes, it's a bit long, but generally well worth it.
