This book ranks well in the Phryne series. Interesting plot and sub-plots and excellent reader - Kerry Greenwood writes a wonderful yarn and Stephanie Daniel brings it all to life.
The detail of circus life and the training required by the horse folk.
I've seen the ABC1 version and truthfully unless you take all of the book and are true to the Kerry Greenwood Phryne I'm not certain it would be a good move separate from the series.
I'm not sure I would recommend this book for a simple reason that I am a prude and although I'm understanding of Phryne's 'habits' with the opposite sex, I was uncomfortable with the level used in this installment of the series.
I've listened to all of the series to this point and Ms. Daniel's never, ever fails to bring the book to life and her command of the various characters (and their voices) were up to her usual grand standards.
I've read all of the series and hearing them was delightful. The story is the first and sets the stage of who Ms. Fisher is, how she thinks and opens so many doors to the delight you experience under her direction. Her companions are drawn from the selection of humanity placed before her and her ease of deciding a persons worth, regardless of their situation. Her desire for adventure becomes obvious immediately and that curiosity that drives her makes for fun and danger but what a lovely ride, especially with her lovely sports car.I look forward to listening to the entire series and what a pleasure.
Phryne, confident, charming, kind, fearless; what a wonderfully drawn character.
Frankly Ms. Daniel did a wonderful job on all the characters and their various voices.
THE REASON I DECIDED TO START AUDIOBOOKS WAS TO HEAR SOMEONE ELSE'S INTERPRETATION OF THE CHARACTERS AND RICHARD E. GRANT DOES A WONDERFUL JOB. I'VE DECIDED I LIKE THE AUDIO BETTER.
MISS MARPLE OF COURSE - SHE'S THE WHOLE STORY EVEN THOUGH A GOOD DEAL HAPPENS PRIOR TO HER APPEARANCE.
EVERYTHING ABOUT HIS PERFORMANCE IS WONDERFUL; STYLE FOR EACH CHARACTER FIT PERFECTLY AND HIS PLAY ON MISS MARPLE WAS JUST TERRIFIC.
NO PARTICULAR MOMENT STRUCK ME AS KEY, THE WHOLE STORY IS RELEVANT AND WHEN YOU HEAR THE TRUTH - DOWN TO THE LAST CHAPTER - YOU RECALL DIFFERENT PIECES THAT MADE IT ALL FALL TOGETHER.
YES, I'VE READ THE ENTIRE SERIES AND DECIDED TO START MY AUDIOBOOK USE WITH A FAMILIAR FRIEND. ALTHOUGH THIS IS THE SECOND IN THE SERIES, IT PROVIDES JUST ENOUGH 'HISTORY' TO PUT YOU AT A VERY GOOD JUNCTURE. I ENJOY MYSTERIES, SERIES, NICELY WRITTEN AND RELAXING TALES = READ CAROLA DUNN AND HER DAISY DALRYMPLE SERIES.
IT'S RELAXING AND MOVES ALONG WITH ENOUGH 'MYSTERY' TO KEEP YOU INTERESTED.
I HAVEN'T HEARD MS. DUNNE PREVIOUSLY, I AM NEW TO AUDIOBOOKS, BUT I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO READ ANOTHER BOOK SHE NARRATES, NICELY DONE AND SHE UNDERSTOOD THE STORY AND THE CHARACTERS.
IT KEPT MY INTEREST, EVEN THOUGH I'D READ IT A WHILE AGO, AND I ENJOYED IT FROM BEGINNING TO END.
