BUT, what could have been a pretty good story, was marred by whining, and once again a protagonist that starts off competent etc, and then dissolves into a victim.
I don't know if the author had intended for her protagonist to be such a whiner, but the narrator certainly portrayed her as such.
Unless you can stand a whiny victim, don't bother with this book.

Characters are well developed, very real. The story does not disappoint.

Great story, hated to have it end

I first book I listened to by George Guidall was Hard Country. It was a five star performance, which led to to this book.Guidall has the perfect voice for the west, gritty,tough, very good nuance.

Yes, but I'm glad I couldn't. I really enjoyed every hour.

I have to agree with Erik and James, the book started out with an intriguing premiss, if a somewhat dark beginning. But, the later part of the book is just reflective of Quentin's depression and misery. I kept listening hoping for something to make me engage with the characters but it never happened. Where was the wonder and excitement, with the new worlds? It seemed more like a corruption of Narnia. The narrator was excellent.

This is the best book I have listened to in over a year. My husband is the lover of coyboy stories, but this sounded interesting so I decided to give it a try. Don't let the lenght of the book deter you, I wanted more.
The characters are really well developed, the writer and narrator give you a real feel for the times and country. This is no place for wimps and thouchy-feely types, rather tough, stoic, deal with the situation and move on types. Which is not to say there is no friendship or love for characters. Quite the opposite, the story shows how love, loyalty and friendship bridge the years.
The story runs from the mid 1800's to WWI, chronicling the changes in the country side, towns coming and going, and inventions (electricity/ cars). The characters are so real, and the narration is superb. I will definitely look for more books narrated by George Guidall.

Many twists and turns, Flynn does not disappoint! I could listen to it all over again, which would be a first for me.

I really appreciated how he captures the flavor of Washington, seemingly more corrupt as each year passes. Also, how Washington insiders fail to understand the mentality of the middle east.

Can't wait till the next Mitch Rapp book.

Too much emphasis on the political positions...just get to the story for goodness sake. Yes we have all heard the the world is coming to an end because of mankind. Nevermind the millions of years of fact behind climate change. Get over it!

As I stated before, not a bad story once we Get to the story, but 3 stars only.

Reader is awesome, he saved the book

Don't even start unless you can stomach the narrartor wailing "Noooaah" over and over again. The protagonist is sooo pitiful. Sure, she lost her small child, and she knows she is acting "insane", but she keeps doing it.
After about the 10th time, one just wants the story to end, yet it drags on. When you think it might finally get going, the protagonist (a supposedly tough, intellegent, former business woman) devolves into a puddle, and moans some more.

A bit tedious in the beginning, didn't expect the British accents, also the the OCD...But that soon faded as I got into the story. Good story line, lots of suspense, makes one wonder how often this happens in real life.

One of the books I will definately listen to again.

The protagonist, he seemed so human, and unwilling to see those he cared about, were only his "friend" for money and power.

Easy to listen to, just the right amount of drama.

Wanted to listen more than just my commute, that's for sure.
