"A glimpse into a brilliant writers life."
I have one thing to say: "Get trashed less and write more." This book is awesome and gripping and Van Der Beek makes it hum! I didn't want to miss a word. I would like audible.com to put the other books by Ellis in an audio format with Van Der Beek as the reader. I am emailing a thumbs up to all of my audiphile addicts.
"AMAZING read of this great book!"
When Jake reads this it is like a 4 hour poetry reading. He reads every sentence like it is the only sentence. I have all of his movies and love this guy. Who knew he would be so outstanding as a narrator. I have loved this story for many, many years and have other copies from Audible, but this is THE best of all.
To me, FSF only writes a sentence that carries the story forward. There is no blah, blah, blah in his writing. Every character in the story is developed. You know them. You care for them. They are precious to the theme of the story. He writing has this amazing sense of humor. For example, when they buy the dog off of a dog peddler on the street. Just incredible for the concise, sarcastic, exchange between the characters. Love, love, love it!
And Jake pulls this off so well. I've read/heard/seen this story many, many times, but how Jake reads this scene is just, well, hysterical.
ALL
Did that.
I only hope we get to hear more from Jake. This has been, by far, my most fav book in years.
"Loved this book and narrator!"
The story was so well written and insightful. I thought it was well edited with no spare parts. I enjoyed the development of the characters and how I came to appreciate them.
Wonderful tone of voice and no over acting.
Yes! I couldn't make it, but it had my interest from the very beginning.
Keep writing Matthew....I will be waiting for the next book.
"Not for me."
I just figured out something. This book desperately needed to be edited. I made it to the second download and felt I did not know much more than I knew by Chapter 3. I was wondering why the author keep repeating the same information over and over. I am ready to start Chapter 7 and still don't know why the main character has a scar and further more I no longer care. Then it hit me...a book that has 2 to 3 downloads costs a bunch more than one where the entire book requires only one download. I think this encourages repetitive, long, drawn out stories that could have easily been edited into a concise and more enjoyable experience. After a while it just becomes blah, blah, blah.
Also, if I had known it was a story involving reference to the holocaust I would not have purchased it in the first place. I do remember and appreciate that horrid event in human history, but to me it is a cheap way to give a story meaning. I have read a number of books where the holocaust is the central theme like Schlindler's List and The Pianist and for me they are stories that help you see and remember. But, The Storyteller uses the holocaust to get the character where she needs to go. So my review is based on half the story because I cannot make it to the end. This is only my opinion and I note that many people really liked this book as you can see by the other reviews.
Very nice.
"It went so fast!"
If you are a movie nut and love reading about behind the scenes you will love this book. I am crazy about Audrey anyway. She survived the Nazi invasion and she was just a young girl. She went on to be such a star and made wonderful movies.
The inside look at Audrey Hepburn's personality.
What is not to like? He is just the BEST,
This was an interesting and fun look at that time and how times were changing.
"Thought provoking, well written and well read."
It is a well written well narrated story that grabs your interest and makes you think.
The final sentence.
I love her narration and her voice is wonderful. She did a superior job with the different characters.
When Lin and Helen go to find Darrow
You will not be disappointed with this purchase.
"Riveting story, incredible narrator!"
I'm enjoying every word of this interesting story and it is narrated so well by Jonathan Davis. I am looking forward to listening to books 2 and 3.
"Wonderful!!!"
I loved this book!!! It was interesting from the first sentence. Rob Lowe narrates the book so well I hope he thinks about reading more books. I would buy them all. You won't be disappointed. I watched all of his movies and the West Wing again with the in put from the book. It was wonderful. I was so sorry when I finished the book because I miss its company for the long drive to work.
"Preachy"
This novel started out interesting and evolved into the Christians are the good guys and the Islams are the bad guys. I'm so tired of that theme.
"Good story, irritating narrator lisp."
I enjoyed the story but the narrator has this annoying lisp with certain words that end in the 's' sound...like his dentures don't fit correctly. It sounds like a picky complaint, but it really is irritating after awhile. I finally listened to the last half, while cleaning the garage, on a pair of cheapo travel speakers. That made it more tolerable and I got through to the end.
"Excellent story and narration."
Don't miss this audible book! This is a gripping, wonderful and interesting story and it is so well read. I enjoyed it from start to finish.
