It was the splendor and the scandal of the age. In 1506, the ferociously ambitious Renaissance Pope Julius II tore down the most sacred shrine in Europe, the millennium-old St. Peter's Basilica built by the Emperor Constantine over the apostle's grave, to build a better basilica.

This book is full of vivid detail about the Popes and artists who created St. Peter's Basilica. The personalities of Michelangelo and Julius II loom large in their clashes. The mismanagement of funds leading to the sack of Rome in 1527 is particularly devastating, and ripping stuff! I would love to see the book made into a miniseries. Josephine Bailey's lilting English accents brings it all to life. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Art History or in Rome.

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the best-selling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison - even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive. Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life.

Would you try another book from Marissa Meyer and/or Rebecca Soler?

Not at this point. I breezed through Cinder, noting the bad writing and poor grammar, but a third of the way through Scarlet, I'm starting to cry uncle. The author doesn't know the difference between 'splice' and 'slice', just as an example. It's like reading Bizarro World writing. My kingdom for an editor!

Would you recommend Scarlet to your friends? Why or why not?

No. Wish I could, but the malapropisms and Freshman English mistakes, the passive voice, sometimes in every other paragraph! The crazy dialogue tags. "He gritted." Please, no. It burns! The conceit is great! I like the near future scifi universe, although I won't argue with folks who point out some logical inconsistencies.

Which character – as performed by Rebecca Soler – was your favorite?

Cinder and Scarlet are both really fun heroines, very active and liberated and fiery in a good old fashioned romance novel kind of way. I like the characters a lot. The heroes are fun, too. Thorn feels a little like a Han Solo rehash, but that's cool. Han's a great character.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Maybe.

    Any additional comments?

Time to reform that public school system, people! Let's get us some good grammar up in here!
