This is another installment in this engrossing story... I thought it was the final of 3 books, but it's certainly not the end of the story, so I look forward to the next book? Trilogy? Still can't stand the narrator.
I have listened to several books that feature the female protagonist disguised as a man, and this one was no different, although I was a little bemused at the gushingly romantic, storybook ending. I'm not sure if this is young-adult, but it seems to be, and fits that genre well. Whimsical, with highly likable characters, and an inventive plot, but nothing ground-breaking. And the narrator makes it an easy listen, too.
While not as gripping or engrossing as the first book, 'Cinder', this was still an enjoyable listen. Some of the characters introduced were less than believable, and there are so many characters and the story seen from so many perspectives that this book doesn't seem to have the depth of the first. But I am looking forward to seeing how the next installment develops!
A great continuation of this series. The narrator is why it's a 4/5 - even after over 100 hours of listening over 5 books, she drives me bonkers. The story is worth it though.
It's rare to find books this long that are actually interesting the entire time. After so many hours of having the such rich, well developed characters around, I really missed them when the book was over! I'm not a big fantasy fan, but I found this series to be different and quite unique in some of the concepts used... although that is maybe a neophyte's opinion! The ending was somewhat unsatisfying, but the rest of the book was great. I was sad when it was over.
I haven't read Tad Williams since Otherworld years ago, so I had no idea what to expect. This series is a slightly different take on the ever-so-popular supernatural detective genre, and I found it reminiscent of The Harry Dresden Files; but the characters are not as endearing nor the story lines as hilarious. The God stuff was just background, which was great as I'm NOT Christian. Overall I enjoyed it, and will listen to book #2, but I won't be pining away for it (like I am for the newest Dresden book!). I would actually give it 3.5 stars if I could.
Action? Suspense? Be nice to see more of that!!
I'm a life long sci-fi fan, but this is old school and it shows. It did put me to sleep fast, tho!
Yes! Although I was pretty skeptical, by midway through this was a hell of a story!
This is a great piece of fantasy fiction, with one of the most entertaining and original storylines I have read in a while. Although the characters seemed flat and did grate on my nerves at times, the story is freaking fantastic! One of the few audible books that keeps me awake!
This series is not bad, although not my favorite for this type of book. The storyline is pretty good, and I love Charley's kick-ass attitude, but the constant swooning over Reyes wears a little thin. A little too much romance for my tastes.
Lorelei also narrates Kyra Davis's Sophie Katz books, and they ARE my absolute faves! I am an avid Audbile listener and few narrators can match Lorelei's range of voices and compelling storytelling. I will listen to a book just because she narrates it, and that's a first!
A fresh interpretation!
Obviously writing about the supernatural is big business these days, but Monster has such a hapless main character that I found it quite unique. Everyone is kinda nasty, but it's hilarious! I think the premise is very promising, and although the writing could use some polish, seeing the characters develop could be great fun if this continues on in a series.
