"Exceptionally great book"
This is essentially the second half of a single book - the first half is Pandora's Star. Judas Unchained begins where Pandora's Star left off, in the middle of a very exciting battle for survival. The writing is very descriptive, the action constant and intense. The author has a wonderful and consistent vision of other alien cultures, including philosophy, anatomy, and so on. There are enough threads of today's society that the descriptions of human culture in the future are quite believable and consistent. The narration adds to the quality, and is superb. You'll want to read Pandora's Star first, and download this one before you finish, so that you can go on listening to the end. The ending, of course, is quite satisfying.
"Good yarn"
Unlike the prior reviewers, I really enjoyed this book. It is very much in the same vein as Angels and Demons. Good plot, nice action, and very interesting premise (angels on earth). It has a nice romantic sub-story as well. I enjoyed the author's casual allusions to Milton's Paradise Lost, as well as various mythological tales and the old and new testaments. The narrator nicely made it clear who was speaking, and did a good job. The only minor quibble I had with the book is that the conclusion had a few loose ends - enough for a sequel, likely.
"Terrific read"
First of all, this book is best read as a continuation of Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained. Once you have read those, the rich tapestry of complex plot lines will make perfect sense.
This is a terrific book, but it is one that demands concentration. It has many overlapping plot lines that converge and interlock. Hamilton is a terrific author, and the narration is superb. The one "problem" with this book is that it is the first in a trilogy, and the next 2 books are not yet available. Audible, please give us the next installment of this series (called The Temporal Void") when it is released on March 24, 2009!
"Awesome - don't miss!"
This is an absolutely fabulous book. The author has a complete and comprehensive vision of an entire galaxy, complete with alien societies, advanced technology, politics and philosophies. The pace is fast, the action complex and compelling. There are lots of good strong characters with life stories that interact in a fascinating manner. Most visionary books like this sag in the middle, needing a good edit. Not this one. It is well written from start to finish. And the narration is top-rate. Read Pandora's Star before Judas Unchained, which picks up right where this book ends.
"Great read!"
This is definitely the audio version of a movie that would be called a "chick flick." I loved it. The plot dragged slightly in places, but it had great historical detail, engaging plot and well developed characters.
"Terrific read"
This was an absolutely outstanding book. If you have any familiarity with Detroit, the details of that city's history will resonate. The detailed nature of the book's descriptions brings alive the plot and the characters. I highly recommend it and very much enjoyed it!
"Wonderful story"
This is my favorite book thus far. The narrator is first rate. Her voice weaves word pictures that linger and are lyrical. I can't imagine listening to the much shorter abridged version - I was sorry when this one was over! I had been concerned that the book would contain graphic depictions of violence or other crimes, but it did not.
