Marsalis is one of a new breed...literally. Genetically engineered by the U.S. government to embody the naked aggression and primal survival skills that centuries of civilization have erased from humankind, Thirteens were intended to be the ultimate military fighting force. The project was scuttled, however, when a fearful public branded the supersoldiers dangerous mutants, dooming the Thirteens to forced exile on Earth's distant, desolate Mars colony. But Marsalis found a way to slip back.

"Awesome but not for the faint of heart"

Holy freaking Jesusland what an awesome book!!! This book is great but NOT for the faint of heart easily offended those who dislike graphic descriptions of sex & violence those who find profanity distasteful or those in a christian sect who feel fiction that disparages their religion should be burned in a great big bond fire. Also I read another review that says the book is anti American and I must point out that the book is only against the future america it depicts the book actually states the current america is the GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH some people should listen with more care.
If on the other hand you like cyberpunk dont have a problem with the above mentioned things like a great story and enjoy listening to someone skilled at reading who give a distinct voice to each character so you know whos talking as soon as the accent changes THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU.
I have not listened to any other books in the cyberpunk style and have read very few so Im not reviewing this book as die hard cyberpunk fan just as a die hard audiobook and great story fan. This is one of the books in my library that I will listen to many times (mostly in the approximately 25 days after I have downloaded my 2 new books from audible and finished listening to them).
A final thought if you look at the reviews you will see they generally have 1 thing in common: this book elicited a strong almost viceral opinion. This is NOT something that happens with bad writing. The word "boring" has not been used. To me at least the only offensive writing is writing that is boring. If this is how you feel as well give this a listen.

  • Kraken

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By China Mieville
    • Narrated By John Lee
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

With this outrageous new novel, China Miéville has written one of the strangest, funniest, and flat-out scariest books you will read this—or any other—year. The London that comes to life in Kraken is a weird metropolis awash in secret currents of myth and magic, where criminals, police, cultists, and wizards are locked in a war to bring about—or prevent—the End of All Things.

Caveat Emptor says: "A New Favorite Author"
    "A new favorite"

I was skeptical about this book from the mixed reviews it got. But being a fan of this "type" of book and seeing all the comparisons with one of my favorite authors Neal Gaimon I took the plunge. I am glad I did. This is an excellent story. This often funny, fast paced, and keep you guessing adventure kept me listening far later than I should have. I can see why this book has been compared to some of Neil
Gaimon's and it felt more like Neverwhere than American Gods to me. Though that being said this author has a style all his own. It should come as no surprise to fans of Jon Lee that he gives a pitch perfect performance that's easy to listen to and that he does a superb job in giving each character their own voice. Those who are easily offended will likely find something about which to find offence in this book. Mieville does use adult language and his characters say unflattering things about religion at times so be aware before you plunge in. This is not a children???s book nor is it for the faint of heart. Personally, I wish more people would be so creatively profane and was impressed by many a turn of phrase heard in this book. This book is now on my short list of books that will be listened to many times. Definitely a new favorite.

  • Elantris

    • UNABRIDGED (27 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Brandon Sanderson
    • Narrated By Jack Garrett
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Legendary science fiction author Orson Scott Card calls Brandon Sanderson a writer to watch, and Publishers Weekly says his debut is "outstanding." Once the godlike rulers of the capital of Arelon, the inhabitans of Elantris have been imprisoned within themselves, unable to die after the city's magic failed years ago. But when a new prince falls victim to the curse, he refuses to accept his fate.

"A book for lovers of good books."

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the ideas refreshing and the world the book encompasses to be masterfully crafted. I felt the narrator did a wonderful job and his tone matches the tone of the story nicely. While this novel is written with an adult audience in mind it is appropriate for teens and well enough told that they will be able to follow it. I've been an audible member for 2 years and listened to audio books for close to 15 years. This is one of only a very small number of books that have impressed me enough to write a review. Regardless of your favorite genre this book is a great listen. I definitely found it "credit worthy". Give it a listen.

  • In Your Dreams

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Tom Holt
    • Narrated By Raymond Sawyer

Ever been offered a promotion that seems too good to be true? You know, the sort they'd be insane to be offering to someone like you. The kind where you snap their arm off to accept, then wonder why all your long-serving colleagues look secretly relieved, as if they've been let off some strange and unpleasant hook.

    Julie says: "If you enjoy...."
    "An excellent listen"

If you like fantasy, humor, mystery, or a well read narrative this is the book for you. A sort of cross between a Harry Potter written for adults & The Hitch Hikers Guide (may be even a little Mr. Bean). The reading is one of the best I've heard; with a distinct voice for each character and perfect timing he brings the characters to life and delivers the story with no effort required on your part. What else could you ask for. Enjoy.

    "Awesome book"

An excellent and thought provoking work that blends modern life, religious ideas, and speaks to the heart of our concepts of freedom. This book will have you questioning ideas you have taken for granted and introduce concepts you have yet to consider. I wait with bated breath for the next installation and so will you! Enjoy and beware of The Grid.

  • The Company: A Novel of the CIA

    • UNABRIDGED (41 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Robert Littell
    • Narrated By Scott Brick

"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel," says Tom Clancy, "he should have." In this spectacular Cold-War-as-Alice-in-Wonderland epic, Littell, "the American le Carre," takes us down the rabbit hole and into the labyrinthine world of espionage that has been the CIA for the last half-century. "Ostensibly a single novel, The Company can also be listened to as an anthology of cracking good spy stories," says (Publishers Weekly).

Cynthia says: "Hang on to your Hat"
    "Simply Stunning"

This book got me in trouble. I would find myself sitting in my car, my parked car, listning to this story, and waiting for a good place to stop only to find my wife knocking on the car window asking what I was doing and why I had been sitting in my car for 20 minutes. This book spans the cold war fusing fiction and history flawlessly. One does not have to suspend ones belief, you have to remind yourself its "fiction". While I'm no expert the book seems to accuratly portray the role of the spy and the CIA during the cold war. The characters are rich and multifaucited. I also loved the ever expanding cast and the exploration of how this career effects the family life of the spies. If you are a fan of audio this is an awesome book with not only a riviting story but excellent delivery by the reader. Listen to The Company and take a trip Through the Looking Glass into the world of espionage.
