I cannot get enough of this story and of this narrator, John Lee.
First, the story is so captivating, Picking up a few years after where War of the Worlds(Book1) left off, Winter of the world continues to follow the families you already know so well. Happy, sad, funny and miserable, this book carried me through the range of emotions. Even after hours and hours and hours of listening, when it ended, I was so disappointed and just dying for more. Maybe I will just have to listen to it again.
The narrator, John Lee, is MASTERFUL!!! He gives a unique voice to each character in a way that is so impressive and really drew me into the story even more. I have LOVED everything he has done. Love him!
This is a classic American novel that I can't believe I hadn't read earlier. Having just finished it, I can see why it is a classic. Great story that made me feel like I was living the lifestyle of the 1920s that the author described so vividly. Jake Gyllenhall did a fabulous job narrating and the tone and cadence of his voice made me want more and more. My only regreat was that I finished it too quickly.
Pillars of the Earth was a magnificent listen that I could hardly put down. Sadly, as all good things do, it came to an end. Fortunately, Ken Follett wrote a sequel, World Without End, which gave me another 45+ hours of listening pleasure.
I usually believe that the print version is always the best version as it lets me use my imagination. However, with John Lee reading, I'm not so sure I can say that here. I loved listening to this story. It is so rich with detail and John Lee's voice is so perfect with this book from accent to rhythem to giving different voices to different characters which help with recognition. The way he does it is so interesting and not in the least bit annoying.
These are fantastic stories with a tremendously talented reader. You too will enjoy it!
I had been wanting to read this book for years now but the size of it intimidated me (1000 pages is a big commitment and hard to carry around). Within minutes of listening to John Lee's voice reading this book I was sucked in and never wanted it to end. Fortunately, with roughly 40 hours of reading time, it didn't end . . . well, for awhile. When it did, I just wanted more. Fotunately there is a sequel!
Alaina - She is a stong resourceful woman who faces adversity at every turn.
I will be listening to anything and everything John Lee reads. He has a great way of giving different voices, masculine and feminine, to the different characters in a way that is distinguishable but not annoying.
