Something is alive inside Jupiter's ice moon Europa. Robot probes find an ancient tunnel beneath the surface, its walls carved with strange hieroglyphics. Led by elite engineer Alexis Vonderach, a team of scientists descends into the dark...where they confront a savage race older than mankind....

Whuh? This can't be how the book was written. Imagine a book made up of hundreds of files played in sequence... now imagine setting the device to shuffle. And listening to the files in random order. Hearing major plot developments. And character details in the first 5 minutes has totally ruined the "what happens next?" Allure ....

I'll resserve judgement in case a twist comes up and clears the confusiin..... but so far im very disappointed in what s seemed like a really good story.

After more than a century of isolation, the paths between stars are again open and the people of Alta in contact with their sister colony on Sandar. The opening of the foldlines has not been the unmixed blessing the Altans had supposed, however. For the reestablishment of interstellar travel has brought with it news of the Ryall, an alien race whose goal is the extermination of humanity. If they are to avoid defeat at the hands of the aliens, Alta must seek out the military might of Earth.

. Well... this book should have a "do not operate machinery while listening" disclaimer. It's almost like the author intended the book to be as dull and boring as possible. I gave it two stars because there is about 2hrs on the second part that actually followed the summary... the rest? I actually fell asleep listening.

I’m pretty much f**ked. That’s my considered opinion. F**ked. Six days into what should be the greatest two months of my life, and it’s turned into a nightmare. I don’t even know who’ll read this. I guess someone will find it eventually. Maybe 100 years from now. For the record... I didn’t die on Sol 6. Certainly the rest of the crew thought I did, and I can’t blame them. Maybe there’ll be a day of national mourning for me, and my Wikipedia page will say "Mark Watney is the only human being to have died on Mars."

This is one of those books that grabs you from page 1, and never lets go. VERY engaging characters and peppered with my favorite foul mouthed sarcastic form of humor. The narration is spot on.... and I dearly hope that the term "pirate ninjas" becomes a standard unit of measure for space exploration. Lol. I can't wait to see more from this author on audible.

In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October, 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

The word "awe" isn't hyperbole. When I READ this book, I used a sick day so that I could keep reading. The story is that riveting. But a history lesson robs Shackleton's saga of the human angle of the story. This book brings the legend to life... and no dry textbook will bring across just how amazing the story is..

The mining ship El Cavador is far out from Earth, in the deeps of the Kuiper Belt, beyond Pluto. Other mining ships, and the families that live on them, are few and far between this far out. So when El Cavador’s telescopes pick up a fast-moving object coming in-system, it’s hard to know what to make of it. It’s massive and moving at a significant fraction of the speed of light.

El Cavador has other problems. Their systems are old and failing. The family is getting too big for the ship. There are claim-jumping corporate ships bringing Asteroid Belt tactics to the Kuiper Belt.

The base plot and story is pretty good. Even though I'm pre-informed about the Formic Bugs, I found myself eager to see what happened next. In that sense, it's neat to see the "how it came to be" in O.S. Card's "Ender-verse". There are two reasons I gave the book a lower rating.
    1. Someone apparently subscribing to the "Clancy school of Super Ninja-Soldier" fiction apparently decided to interrupt Card's book at random with a corny novella of their own. Maybe we should inform the author?? The sub-plot is a little cheezy and adds nothing to the story. These interruptions were (to me) irritating and left me struggling to change gears back to the story I WANTED to read. And this is coming from a fan of military fiction.
    2. The other reviews are right. The cliffhanger tone to the ending on this book was VERY VERY VERY overdone. It's like passionate lovemaking where the intensity builds.. then abruptly the couple stops, gets out of bed and wordlessly leaves the room. The ending is THAT jarring and unsatisfying.

My recommendation to others: Don't buy this book until the sequel comes out, When it does, get them both. Taken together, this and the next book would get a higher rating. As it is... "Earth Unaware" was a bit disappointing.
