Although admittedly the writing was well done, I have never read a book that could find so little good in the human race. This was a depressing view of India in a time of turmoil, but without the redeeming human spirit. I kept waiting and hoping some optimism would rise from the ashes of this missive, but it never came. Recommended by me? to no one.
Enjoyed the listen
yes, I like Elmore Leonard but he has written so much over such a long career that some are just better than others
Worth the time
Th narrator suited the book, but I didn#t
May like it if you are involved in the lifestyle
too much time spent on lesbian lifestyle & not enough on the story
Yes, I love this one so much that, unless he puts out a new book soon, I will keep rereading all 3 books
Th narrator just seems perfect for this story. He nadles the humour, the adventure, & even the softer storyline perfectly. The different charcacters were well defined & seemed to suit
Just read it!
I love listening to Will Pattons melodic voice read the beautifully descriptive words of James Lee Burke. The man maked you feel like you're in the deep south living amongst the many real & flawed characters. You can feel the autumnal breezes, smell the flowers & sea air and feel the humidity as the story unfolds.
Right up until the end, you are never really sure who the 'bad guys' are; or rather, who are the 'worst guys'
And what a voice Patton has! Sometimes, if I'm having trouble sleeping, I put on one of his previous 'read' narrations so I'm not afraid of missing plot points, and I let him read me to sleep.
You won't be disapointed in this one!
Johnny Depp was a good choice for narration; but when the other chap takes over, I had to speed up my i-pod for the 1st time ever. You find yourself getting frustrated waiting for the word to end.
This book gave me an insight into Keith I never thought possible & I had to chage all my pre-conceived notions on how the man lives. It finally gives answer to the question "How can Keith still be alive living as he does?"
This one is going in the classics list!
I loved Ikey, performed & written so clear I could picture his treacherous visage everytime he spoke.
When Ikey trains his boys on the tricks of the street I was fascinated not only with the bare facts of survival in the London streets but also with the strange love they felt for one another
Ikey, so he could teach me his tricks!
I bought this trilogy on spec with a 2 for 3 trilogy sale. I was in the bush & whenever mt I-pod ran out of juice I immediately started up our emergency generator so that I could keep on listening! You can't stop.
I would highly recommend this whole series
I'ver read every Maggody book, but this is the 1st one I've listened to. Love the story but was not happy with Mrs Jim Bob and Estelle's 'voices.' Could have had more fun with the pastors voice as well. The rest of the narration was fine. The story was once again the kind you couldn't put down (or pause, I guess). Definitely worth every cent!
Once again, a great story; but the choice of narrator is just 'off' for this story. It almost put me off listening, if the story wasn'y so good. So listen to the narrator before you buy; you may prefer to read this one the old fashioned way
While this is a 'nice' book, like a slightly boring visit to a loved maiden aunt, this series in general does not even come close to the Ladies Detective Agency series.
Plotting was far weaker in this one than so many of the other books he has written. a disappointment
