In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

I am not finished with the book yet, and it is good so far. I would mostly like to warn listeners to take it in expecting much LESS than The Hunger Games. It is a cool idea, and the characters are likable. Overall Id say the book lacks maturity, where the hunger games was fantastic for all ages. Divergent is much more geared to the younger ages, and I would compare the writing itself more closely to the Twilight series. However the story is more interesting than Twilight it just lacks the emotional maturity that draws in the broader audience that The Hunger Games captured. That being said I will finish the book and might consider (if it gets better) purchasing a sequel. Its more likely I think that this will be like the Matched series that got all hyped up as being the next Hunger Games and ended up disappointing many who expected much more. Tackle this book expecting less and you will not be annoyed.

If this narrator reread book one I would buy the book again just to have a matching set. I'm getting through the book because I love the author but book one was just horrible to listen to. I like the series enough to listen to them again I'm the future but it will be hard to get though book one again if a new version isn't made. This reader is soooooo much better.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator has just one of the most jarring terrible voices I have ever heard. He sounds like a bad actor playing a school yard bully or surfer dude. Basically sounds like a douche. I really wanted to enjoy this book and I love the author but I just don't know if I can do it in audiobook format.

In my 10+ years of constant audiobook listening I have found maybe 4 books I can't finish, and this is the only one that is due to the reader.

Raised in a family of circus performers, Helena's always dreamed of leading a more ordinary life. But when haunting music draws her into a strange and magical realm, one where anything can happen, her real life is stolen by a runaway from the other side. Helena must rescue the realm from chaos in order to win back her own not-so-ordinary life.

This has to be the shortest story I've read/listened to that didn't feel incomplete. Somehow in one hour, Gaiman made me care about the characters. Its impressive.

What other book might you compare A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty to and why?

The Help, it creates the same kind of endearing characters and flips beautifully between the perspective of three different women.

    Any additional comments?

This book is absolutely enthralling. I stopped watching tv to sit in my room under the covers and listen. The author does a beautiful job of showing the perspectives of three different women of different ages, all of which are incredible. My issue with books that switch between characters tends to be that I will have my favorites or find one dry, and it will be like I'm waiting to get back to the good part; this book is the only one since The Help that I loved all perspectives equally. This book is what you get when you take a lovable cast of characters, and create a little bit of a mystery novel out of it. I absolutely recommend this book.

How to Be an American Housewife is a novel about mothers and daughters and the pull of tradition. It tells the story of Shoko, a Japanese woman who married an American GI, and her grown daughter, Sue, a divorced mother whose life as an American housewife hasn't been what she'd expected. When illness prevents Shoko from traveling to Japan, she asks Sue to go in her place. The trip reveals family secrets that change their lives in dramatic and unforeseen ways.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were real, easy to connect with even if you haven't lived through what they have. They make you care, enough so that I teared up.

Which character – as performed by Laural Merlington and Emily Durante – was your favorite?

by far the second half with Helena and Sue. I adored the first half as well but there was just something about the mother daughter dynamic of them that made me smile.

    Any additional comments?

Mature and enchanting. I am a very picky listener and this is to my liking.

I purchased Poison Study over itunes so I couldn't review it. However, these books are one of my top favorites of all times. Mature, interesting, creative, and original; these books are fantastic in so many ways and the characters are some of my favorites, up there with Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. Im a huge audiobook consumer and this is really something special to try.

Would you try another book from Patricia Briggs and/or Katherine Kellgren and Patricia Briggs (introduction) ?

The opening of the audio is the author basically saying she is ashamed of the book and dislikes it...this is a good few minute speech. It turned me off to the book which I didn't make it far into. Very teenager-y for my taste.

    What disappointed you about Stray?

Writing is immature and weak, I didn't even make it two hours in and will not be finishing it. Curses, which I am ok with if used tastefully but every few sentences seemed more like a stab at rebellion and I found grating and irritating. The description of the outfits and the character dialog, the whole thing was extremely juvenile. A prepubescent could write above this level, don't waste your credit.
