In eight incantatory sections, The Buddha in the Attic traces the extraordinary lives of young Japanese brides, from their arduous journey by boat, where they exchange photographs of their husbands, imagining uncertain futures in an unknown land; to their arrival in San Francisco and their tremulous first nights as new wives; to their backbreaking work picking fruit in the fields and scrubbing the floors of white women; to their struggles to master a new language and a new culture; to their experiences in childbirth, and then as mothers....

What made the experience of listening to The Buddha in the Attic the most enjoyable?

A classic love story. The perspective of what it felt like to be new in America in a different era. Describing different levels of acceptance or love by each individual, only to be rebuffed.

What does Samantha Quan and Carrington MacDuffie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrators give character to each individual by using emotion instead of voices.

"Its mission is to document everyday life in this country. We sometimes think of it as a documentary show for people who normally hate documentaries. A public radio show for people who don't necessarily care for public radio. What we look for in putting the show together are stories that we love, truly love." Get the latest issue or subscribe!

I LOVE this program! Where they find such interesting people and subjects is beyond me. And yet, we are surrounded by them. The entire staff just seems to have a way with drawing people out of their shells. Commentaries by people like Sara Vowell and David Sedaris are an added bonus that usually has me laughing out loud.

The Hours is the story of three women: Clarissa Vaughan, Laura Brown, and Virginia Woolf. By the end of the novel, the stories intertwine in remarkable ways, and finally come together in an act of subtle and haunting grace.

Steve says: "Very literary, intentionally slight plot"
    "Too much hype?"
    Overall

Maybe my expectations were inflated - I was not at all impressed. Too many deep and detailed descriptions of of mundane situations. Maybe that was the whole point? I gave it 1 star only because the ending was interesting.
