I was disappointed by Protector. The other reviews mislead me into thinking Protector was in the same class as other great sf such as Dune, Stranger in a Strange Land, or Asimov?s Foundation (first two). I have been a sf reader for 45 years and this is not up to par with other great classic sf. The book started out very promising, had many good hard sf factors as mentioned by other reviewers (i.e., the long time periods of space flight) and the reader was great. The first half of the book setup a good foundation for a great ending. However, the last third of the book did not deliver on that promise. The hard science got real crazy from a physics point-of-view and the story started to drag. The biggest disappointment was the ending. It appeared rushed in its telling as if the author did not know how to end the story ? so he just ended it in a few paragraphs. I was left hanging wanting a better resolution to the plot. For those who want 5 good hours of sf, this book delivers; but you may be disappointed by the last 2 hours.
