China Miéville doesn’t follow trends, he sets them. Relentlessly pushing his own boundaries as a writer—and in the process expanding the boundaries of the entire field—with Embassytown, Miéville has crafted an extraordinary novel that is not only a moving personal drama but a gripping adventure of alien contact and war. In the far future, humans have colonized a distant planet, home to sentient beings famed for a language unique in the universe, one that only a few altered human ambassadors can speak....

If you could sum up Embassytown in three words, what would they be?

    Challenging, thought-provoking

    Any additional comments?

Once again China Mieville has put down a thought-provoking and totally unique story, one that takes on what it means to have a mind and to use language. Susan Duerden's narration was top of the line; as with the best in her profession, she brings something to the story rather than simply reading it.

Well done on all levels. Perhaps a bit more far-fetched than I'd prefer but that's balanced by a nice study of personalities, particularly as involve marriage and family. Made me want to check out more by this author and performer.

When a murdered woman is found in the city of Beszel, somewhere at the edge of Europe, it looks to be a routine case for Inspector Tyador Borlof the Extreme Crime Squad. But as he investigates, the evidence points to conspiracies far stranger and more deadly than anything he could have imagined. Borl must travel from the decaying Beszel to the only metropolis on Earth as strange as his own.

What did you love best about The City & The City?

It's a clever murder mystery wrapped up in a Mievillian complex tale involving a slice of the world that takes international politics to an extreme level.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book thoroughly. China Mieville is the thinking man's author. And, as usual, John Lee's narration was superb: rather than just presenting the book his work added to it. If you like your bookscapes off beam and challenging, this is for you.
