After a decade spent in isolation in the Ugandan jungles thinking about stuff, David Cross has written his first book. Known for roles on the small screen such as "never-nude" Tobias Funke on Arrested Development and the role of "David" in Mr. Show with Bob And David, as well as a hugely successful stand-up routine full of sharp-tongued rants and rages, Cross has carved out his place in American comedy.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If the book was entertaining or funny.

What was most disappointing about David Cross’s story?

I have been a fan of Cross for years, seen him do stand-up, loved his stand-up CD "Shut up you F***in baby!" and listened to it many times.
But this book was absolutely boring! Didn't laugh once. And Im sad to say he came off as sort of obnoxious :(

Would you be willing to try another one of David Cross’s performances?

Definitely- I will keep checking out his stand-up.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    hmmm... no?

Twice Claire has used an ancient stone circle to travel back to the 18th century. The first time she found love with a Scottish warrior but had to return to the 1940s to save their unborn child. The second time, 20 years later, she reunited with her lost love but had to leave behind the daughter that he would never see. Now Brianna, from her 1960s vantage point, has found a disturbing obituary and will risk everything in an attempt to change history.

I am in love with the Outlander Series, and the audio book is done so amazingly well with the genius of the narrator, Davina Porter. This book is my new favorite in the series. It is exciting and full of heart. These characters feel like walking breathing people to me, and the backdrop of the pre-REvolutionary war, with American settlers, is a great change of pace from previous settings.

What disappointed you about The Marijuana-Logues?

This is not even charming in an outdated, juvenile, sort of "teenage" way. I expected more of Doug Benson, who I normally enjoy!

Has The Marijuana-Logues turned you off from other books in this genre?

    no

Travel to other planets is now a reality, and with overpopulation stretching the resources of Earth, the necessity of finding habitable worlds is growing ever more urgent. There’s a problem though—because the spaceships are slower than light, any communication between the exploring ships and Earth would take years.

Tom and Pat are identical twin teenagers. As twins they’ve always been close, so close that it seemed like they could read each other’s minds.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

    If they enjoyed sci-fi

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Underwhelmed

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I liked the slow pace. The dialogue was stiff and too formal.

Was Time for the Stars worth the listening time?

yes. It had some very interesting ideas about space and time and a future in which humans are exploring those concepts with adventure

    Any additional comments?

I loved this book for the first half- it felt like a fabulous set-up for an adventure, and I was pumped! Then it just sort of fizzled out, and I felt as though nothing too exciting had happened. I cared about the characters less at the end than when I first met them. The relationships and characters don't evolve, and the interactions between them feel flat. I still enjoyed the overall experience somewhat, as it posed some cool ideas about the (fantastical) reality future explorations of space, and there are some interesting scenes. PS- I am not typically a sci-fi fan, I am more of a fantasy nerd.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Im not sure why the author chose to make the characters so unsympathetic at first- I really didn't feel any interest for them or their story at all and they annoyed me. The second half of the story takes on a more interesting turn; it introduces a new time and place, and some part of me was interested enough to listen through to the end. The story is somewhat redundant, and there is a big "reveal" which the reader sees coming for miles, so it is boring to listen to the characters muddling through the mystery. I found myself rolling my eyes at this book frequently.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Sort of a boring performance. Accents weren't great.

Was The Forgotten Garden worth the listening time?

    sigh. Don't think so.

New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon enchanted scores of fans with Outlander, her electrifying historical saga set in 18th-century Scotland. Now this sequel sweeps listeners back into the past as Claire relates more of her perilous sojourn there with her Scottish warrior husband, James Fraser. Twenty years after her strange journey back in time, Claire has returned to Scotland with her daughter, determined to share with her the secret she has harbored since her time travel.

Daniel says: "Finally! The unabridged version is here!"
"Satisfying, although not as great as "Outlander""
    Overall

I have read "Outlander," the first in these series many times, and adored Davina Porter's lively reading and amazingly varied accents so very much. This second book in the series is also a great read, and Porter is again amazing as the reader. I thought the beginning portions dragged a bit in location/plot/ narrative, (which I won't elaborate in fear of a spoiler), and was overjoyed when the story took us back to what I loved from Outlander. Warning: I was convinced I had accidentally downloaded the wrong book in the series for the first 25 minutes of listening; stick with it! it just seems as though you have skipped an entire book in the beginning.

Kathryn Lunetta says: "Beautiful story, beautifully written."
    "Mediocre"

I am not in love with this book. While the male narrator is stupendous and breathes much life into one character and story, I find the other narrators lacking and even grating, and I was not engrossed with the main plot line, nor the characters, nor the writing style.
