What would happen if you were visited by your younger self, and got a chance for a do-over?Alice Love is twenty-nine years old, madly in love with her husband, and pregnant with their first child. So imagine her surprise when, after a fall, she comes to on the floor of a gym (a gym! she HATES the gym!) and discovers that she's actually thirty-nine, has three children, and is in the midst of an acrimonious divorce.

Well, I should say I couldn't stop listening! Someone recommended this book for a book club read and I had never heard of it or the author but I am thrilled to have been introduced to it! I found myself identifying with all of the characters in some way and the author writes their varied complexities with effortless skill. I also loved the way the stories of multiple characters were woven in throughout. A very good book indeed! I am now planning to get another titled by this author and the same narrator, who was also fantastic by the way. I highly recommend.

Set in New York City in 1938, Rules of Civility tells the story of a watershed year in the life of an uncompromising 25-year-old named Katey Kontent. Armed with little more than a formidable intellect, a bracing wit, and her own brand of cool nerve, Katey embarks on a journey from a Wall Street secretarial pool through the upper echelons of New York society in search of a brighter future.

I thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully written prose of this engaging story about a young woman in New York City during the late 1930s. Certain parts of the book may have been a little slow but overall the experience was delightful. I would highly recommend!
