  • Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal

Best-selling author Mary Roach returns with a new adventure to the invisible realm we carry around inside. Roach takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: The questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff and every bit as surreal as the universe of zero gravity explored in Packing for Mars. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts?

Would you try another book from Mary Roach and/or Emily Woo Zeller?

    I don't think so.

What was most disappointing about Mary Roach’s story?

Her attempts at humor did not work making the story dull.

How could the performance have been better?

    The reader was flat.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Gulp?

    none

    Any additional comments?

    none

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Pirriwee Public's annual school Trivia Night has ended in a shocking riot. One parent is dead. The school principal is horrified. As police investigate what appears to have been a tragic accident, signs begin to indicate that this devastating death might have been cold-blooded murder. In this thought-provoking novel, number-one New York Times best-selling author Liane Moriarty deftly explores the reality of parenting and playground politics, ex-husbands and ex-wives, and fractured families.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

If you like soap operas it might be a good beach read....

What could Liane Moriarty have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    She was quite good

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Big Little Lies?

It was far too long a story with no real sense of drama or mystery

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Would you listen to The Winds of War again? Why?

I may, even though I don't usually repeat something I've read or watched.

What did you like best about this story?

Kevin did a fantastic job with all of the many languages and characters...no two ever sounded alike!

What about Kevin Pariseau’s performance did you like?

    Everything!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh and cry. Also it taught me so much about WW II and the Holocaust that I hadn't known, while being completely entertaining.

Would you consider the audio edition of War and Remembrance to be better than the print version?

Absolutely, because Kevin brought all the characters to life!

Have you listened to any of Kevin Pariseau’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Kevin is the best reader of all of the books I have listened to. He deserves an award!

If you could take any character from War and Remembrance out to dinner, who would it be and why?

FDR or Aaron Jastrow were the most engaging and intelligent!
